Newark, NJ -  The Wagner College women's basketball team kicks off the 2021-22 season on the road on Tuesday evening, as they make the short trek to Newark, NJ to take on the NJIT Highlanders.

OPENING TIP...
  • Tuesday's contest marks the head coaching debut of Terrell Coburn, who has spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach with the Seahawks.
  • The Seahawks and the Highlanders are opening the season against one another for the first time since the 2016-17 season, where Wagner dropped a 68-45 decision in Newark, NJ back on November 12, 2016.
PRESEASON PREDICTION...
  • Wagner was predicted to finish second in the 10-team Northeast Conference (NEC), according to the Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • The league's head coaches unanimously chose Mount St. Mary's for the second straight year as the preseason favorites.
  • The Seahawks, who advanced to the league title game against the Mountaineers last season, soared to its highest preseason ranking since 2014-15, when the Green & White was predicted to finish fourth in the league.
  • Saint Francis U, Sacred Heart, and Fairleigh Dickinson rounded out the top-five teams. St. Francis Brooklyn, Bryant, Merrimack, LIU, and Central Connecticut wrapped up the ten-team poll
  • Additionally, senior forward Emilija Krista Grava was named to the five-person Preseason All-NEC team. This marks the second straight year that Krista Grava has been named a preseason All-NEC selection.

WELCOME BACK....
  • The Green & White returns 10 players from last season's squad that reached the Northeast Conference (NEC) championship for the first time in nearly two decades.
  • Along with Krista Grava, Coach Coburn brings back seniors Kem Nwabudu and Zhaneia Thybulle and graduate Kate Tokuhara
  • Nwabudu was among the top-30 scores in the conference in her first season on Grymes Hill, averaging close to 10.0 points per game while grabbing a team-best 5.6 caroms a contest.
  • Thybulle solidified the point guard spot, as she finished second in the conference in assists per game, dishing out nearly five a contest.
  • Other returners include senior Raven Pitt, juniors Drayah Heyward and Katrice Jackson, and sophomores Alex Cowan, Marisa Sanchez Henry and Ciara Brannon

NEW TO THE MIX..
 COBURN'S STAFF...
  • Terrell Coburn begins his first season as head coach and has constructed a talented coaching staff.
  • Two newcomers, Samera Marsh and Alycia Gervais, join second-year assistant coach Hannah Howard as Coburn's inaugural staff.
  • Marsh has strong ties to the NEC, having been an assistant at Long Island University while Gervais arrives from Dean College, where she led the Bulldogs to back-to-back NECC Tournament appearances.

WAGNER-NJIT || ALL-TIME SERIES...
  • Tuesday's matchup with NJIT is the 12th all-time meeting, with the Highlanders holding a slim 6-5 edge in the head-to-head series.
  • Wagner was victorious the last time these two met, earning a 61-59 win in thrilling fashion at the Spiro Sports Center back on November 19, 2019.
