Brooklyn, NY – The Wagner College men's basketball will put its three-game win streak on the line on Thursday night, as the Seahawks travel to LIU in a must-win matchup at 7:00 pm. Wagner is currently one game out of a spot in the Northeast Conference (NEC) tournament.
Playoff Picture
With two games remaining in the regular season, the Seahawks trail Bryant and St. Francis Brooklyn for the final spot in the NEC Tournament. Wagner does not control its own destiny and has to win both games to have a shot at the postseason. The Green and White can go as high as the #6 seed in the tournament. A win over LIU and a Bryant loss at Fairleigh Dickinson would set up an elimination game between the Seahawks and Bulldogs on Saturday at the Spiro Sports Center.
Last Time Out
Wagner earned its third straight victory, a gritty 75-71 overtime win over St. Francis Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon. Junior
Elijah Ford led Wagner with 22 points and eight rebounds on the afternoon, while junior
Alex Morales poured in 21 points, including a team-high five points in overtime. Morales also led the Seahawks with a game-high 14 rebounds.
Signature Defense
Wagner's winning streak stands on the foundation of head coach
Bashir Mason's signature defense. The Seahawks have held their last three opponents to just 39.9 percent shooting from the field and 29.8 percent accuracy from distance. Wagner opponents have hit just 17 in total from long range during the streak.
Morales' Big Week
Morales led Wagner to a 3-0 week, averaging 14.3 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per game. Aside from his double-double on Sunday, the junior also contributed 17 points in Wagner's win over CCSU on Friday. Morales ranks second on the team with 13.3 points per contest on the season. For his performances, Morales was named an NEC PrimePerformer.
Eyeing The Sweep
Five Seahawks scored in double figures to lead the Seahawks to a 72-64 victory over LIU in the first meeting between the two teams on January 20. Wagner led for more than 39 minutes of the contest, as graduate student
Curtis Cobb III led the Seahawks with 19 points, including 6-10 shooting from long range, while junior
Elijah Ford added 16 points. The Seahawks led 42-33 at the half and never looked back to earn the win.
Cobb Atop The Stat Sheet
Despite missing the last two games,
Curtis Cobb III continues to lead the Seahawks in multiple statistical categories. Cobb is third in the league at 16.9 points per game while shooting 45.5 percent on two-point shots away from the rim, and has taken a league-high 121 from mid-range.
Ford's Career Game
Elijah Ford scored a career-high 22 points and pulled down eight boards in the Green & White's overtime win over SFBK on Sunday. The junior continues to improve in the Seahawks' offense, averaging 13.2 points per game, 6.8 rebounds per game and shooting 56.7 percent from the field in his last 11 games.
Scouting The Sharks
LIU is currently 8-8 in NEC play and would be the #4-seed if the playoffs started today. The Sharks are 1-3 in their last four contests and are 6-6 at home on the season.
Next Up
Wagner will close out the regular season against Bryant on Saturday, with tip-off between the Bulldogs and Seahawks set for 2pm.
