Staten Island, NY – Graduate student
Curtis Cobb III scored 23 points, including 17 in the second half, while sophomore
Tyrone Nesby IV added 20 points to lead the Wagner College men's basketball team to a 76-61 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday night at the Spiro Sports Center.
For Cobb, it was his seventh 20-point game of the season, while Nesby added his second contest with 20 or more points in his last three games after a career day las week at FDU. Junior
Chase Freeman was the third Seahawk in double figures with 11 points on the night.
With the win, Wagner improves to 6-19 on the season and 3-11 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play, while the Mount falls to 10-17 overall and 6-8 in league play. In a tight NEC playoff race, the Seahawks are still two games out of a playoff spot despite tonight's victory.
The Seahawks jumped out to an early lead, thanks in large part to Nesby's 18 first half points, including 4-5 shooting from long range, and a fast break layup by Freeman gave Wagner its largest lead of the half at 20-8 with 12:47 to play in the first period.
Following a 39-31 halftime lead, the Seahawks quickly extended their advantage to double digits in the second half, but the Mountaineers answered and took the lead with 9:06 to play.
In need of big plays, consecutive threes by Cobb tied the game at 56-56 with six minutes to play, before four straight baskets by Cobb and junior
Alex Morales capped an 11-0 Wagner run with 1:23 to play, giving the Seahawks a 64-56 advantage, which was enough to secure the victory.
In a physical game, Wagner held a 35-34 rebounding advantage, as Cobb and graduate student
Patrick Szpir led the Green and White with seven rebounds apiece.
Wagner led for more than 30 minutes of the contest and shot 44.2% (23-52) on the night, while holding the Mountaineers to 42.1% (24-57) from the field.
Next up, the Seahawks will host Central Connecticut on Friday night, with tip-off set for 7:30 pm at the Spiro Sports Center.
