Curtis Cobb III led all scorers with 25 points to guide the Wagner College men's basketball team to a convincing 66-47 victory over Mount St. Mary's in the Northeast Conference (NEC) opener for both teams.
With the win, the Seahawks move to 4-8 overall, while the Mountaineers fall to 4-10 this season.
After taking a 31-23 lead into the halftime locker room, the Seahawks closed out the contest with a 9-0 run on a three by junior
Chase Freeman and two buckets by Cobb, which gave Wagner a 60-41 lead with just 4:10 remaining.
Head coach
Bashir Mason's signature defense held the Mount to just 24% (12-50) shooting on the night, and a physical performance on offense led to a 28-18 advantage in points in the paint.
Cobb's strong performance included five threes as Wagner converted on nine baskets from deep, holding the Mount to just 3-20 from long range.
Junior
Will Martinez was the second Seahawk in double figures with 11 points, while junior
Alex Morales contributed nine points on the night.
In a tight game early on, Wagner's first scoring spurt came on a Jackson three and consecutive baskets by Martinez to give the Seahawks a 22-13 with 7:41 to play in the first half.
Cobb's hot shooting continued from there, as he scored 13 points in the first half, while an athletic play by Morales after an offensive rebound extended the lead at the halftime buzzer.
The Seahawks, who held the lead for 35:47 minutes in tonight's contest, quickly extended the lead to double digits in the second period, as a three by Cobb and a traditional three-point play by graduate student
Patrick Szpir made it a 38-24 game with 16:36 to play.
The Seahawks never looked back from there, earning a victory in the conference opener for the third consecutive season.
Wagner's first home conference game will be on Saturday, January 4, as the Seahawks will host Sacred Heart at 7:00 pm in a game that will be televised on SNY.
