Staten Island, NY  –  The Wagner College women's basketball team will look for the weekend sweep of its Brooklyn counterparts as the Seahawks are set to host the LIU Sharks on Martin Luther King Day. Tip-off from the Spiro Sports Center is set for 1:00 p.m. 


Wagner All-Time vs. LIU: 
  • The Seahawks lead the all-time series with LIU 44-40. 
  • Wagner is riding a three game-winning streak over LIU, after sweeping the season series a year ago, 72-62 at the Spiro Sports Center (Feb. 2) and a week later earning a 66-62 triumph in Brooklyn (Feb. 9). 
  • Wagner is 3-2 in its last five meetings with LIU, but, LIU is 6-4 over a ten-game stretch against the Green & White. 


Last Time Out For Wagner: 
  • The Wagner women's basketball team converted early and often from long-range which led the Seahawks past the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers, 74-66, on Saturday afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center.
  • For Wagner, it marked its first Northeast Conference (NEC) victory of the season while improving to 5-2 at home this season.
  • Four Seahawks finished in double figures, with guards Alex Cowan and Alayshia Dailey each netting 13 points on a combined 9 of 18 shooting from the floor and 4 of 8 from three-point range. Cowan, in 38 minutes, dished out a game-high eight assists while grabbing four rebounds. Dailey chipped in four assists and three caroms in her 29 minutes of play. 
  • Junior Khaleah Edwards also reached double digits, finished with 12 points in 34 minutes of play while redshirt junior guard Morgan Lenahan contributed 11 points on 5 of 9 shooting from the field while grabbing four rebounds, two steals, and two assists. 
  • Three Terriers scored in double figures, led by Ally Lassen, who notched a team-high 19 points on 5 of 13 shooting from the floor while hitting on 9 of 12 from the free-throw line. She also corralled six rebounds in 35 minutes of play. 
  • Jenna Jordan added 15 points to go along with six rebounds in 34 minutes of action. Nevena Dimitrijevic, the reigning NEC Rookie of the Week, dropped in 11 points while dishing out four assists and snagging five boards in defeat.
 
 
A Win Over LIU Would:
  • be Wagner's second straight win at home and sixth overall this season.
  • be Wagner's 45th in the series against LIU (44-40 entering this afternoon). 
  • be the 26th win at Wagner for Head Coach Heather Jacobs


About The LIU Sharks:
  • LIU makes the short trip across the Verrazzano Bridge was predicted to finish in eighth in the Preseason Coaches' Poll, is 3-13 overall and 2-3 in conference play after falling at Bryant, 57-53, on Saturday afternoon. 
  • Kiara Bell notched a double-double, finishing with a team-high 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in 28 minutes of play. Brandy Thomas chipped in 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and a steal in 27 minutes of play. 
  • LIU has three players averaging double-figures, led Thomas, who is pouring in 13.3 ppg while tying for the team lead on the boards with Bell at 8.1 rpg. 
  • Bell, who is averaging 10.8 ppg, has swatted 28 shots this season in 22.3 minutes per game while shooting a team-best 43.4 percent from the floor. 
  • Johnson, who is also netting 10.8 ppg, has converted 83.3 percent from the free-throw line in a team-high 33.9 mpg. 
  • Ryan Weise leads the club dishing out 3.8 apg in 16 contests. 
  • Collectively, the Sharks are averaging 60.3 ppg on 34.6 percent shooting from the field and connecting on 31.1 percent from the outside. 
  • LIU is averaging 41.7 rebounds a contest while committing 18.1 turnovers and forcing 17.4 per game.


Last Time Against LIU:
  • In a contest in which the Wagner College women's basketball team never trailed, three Seahawks scored in double figures, led by redshirt sophomore forward Taylah Simmons game-high 27 point, 15 rebound outing, as the Seahawks defeated LIU Brooklyn, 72-62, at the Spiro Sports Center on February 2. 
  • Simmons, who tallied 19 of her game-high 27 points in the second half and 14 of which coming in the third quarter, notched her fourth double-double of the season and the sixth of her career after converting on a career-high 11-of-19 from the floor. The 15 rebounds are also a new career-best, surpassing the 13 she picked up a season ago at Longwood (12/10/2017). The Melbourne, Australia native also added three assists and two blocks in 33 minutes of play.
  • Joining Simmons in double digits was sophomore guard Alayshia Dailey, who netted 12 points on just 1-of-4 shooting but was perfect from the free throw line, converting 10-of-10, a new career-high for free throws made. Dailey, who played 25 minutes in today's contest, dished out a team-high five helpers, the fifth time in a six-game span that she has recorded at least five assists.  
  • Senior guard Nakylia Carter chipped in ten points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field while dishing out four assists and swiping two steals in her 27 minutes of action. In total, eight of the nine Seahawk players who played scored, as junior Jordan Hobson and redshirt junior guard, Janelle Mullen, each added eight points on a combined 7-of-12 shooting from the field.
  • LIU Brooklyn also had three net double digits, led by Brandy Thomas' team-high 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field, which included a perfect 6-of-6 stint from the free throw line. Thomas led the way for the visitors on the board with eight in 29 minutes of action. Ryan Weise added 15 points off-the-bench while Tia Montagne chipped in ten points and four assists in her 39 minutes of play.
  • The Seahawks defense held Jeydah Johnson, the conference's second-leading scorer at 18.7 ppg entering today's game, to just six points on 0-of-13 shooting from the field as Johnson went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe in her 36 minutes of play.

Home Sweet Home:
  • Wagner has posted a 5-2 record at the Spiro Sports Center this season. 
  • The Seahawks are averaging 69.0 ppg at home this season, shooting the ball at a 40.5 percent clip from the field while hitting on 36.3 percent from the outside. 
  • The Green & White are outscoring their opponents by one point, 69-68, at home this year. 
  • The Green & White are a plus 3.3 on the boards, averaging 38.3 caroms a contest through seven home games. On the offensive glass, Wagner is out-muscling their opponents, 100-77. 
  • Sophomore Emilija Krista Grava and junior Khaleah Edwards have averaged double-figures, led by Krista Grava, who is pouring in 19.2 ppg in six home games while Edwards is next at 14.9 a contest.
  • Krista Grava currently leads the team on the boards, pulling down 7.2 rpg at the Spiro Sports Center while Edwards is next at 6.7 rpg. 
  • Edwards has made 21 threes at home this season, converting at 52.5 percent clip.  
  • Freshman Alex Cowan has netted 9.6 ppg while dishing out 4.3 apg over the seven Wagner home games.

 
Raining Threes:
  • On January 18 at home against the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers, the Seahawks connected early and often from three-point range. 
  • In the first quarter, Wagner hit on 8 of 14 from beyond-the-arc and in the second quarter, connected on 4 of 8 from the outside. 
  • The program record for made threes is 13, accomplished on two different occasions, the last coming against Quinnipiac back on December 4, 2010. 
  • Dating back to 2016, when the women's game went to quarters instead of halves, the eight three-pointers in the first quarter are the most in program-history. 


Over The Last Five Games:
  • Wagner is 1-4 in its last five games. 
  • The Seahawks are averaging 59.8 ppg while shooting 36.8 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from three-point range. 
  • Junior Khaleah Edwards and sophomore Emilija Krista Grava are both averaging close to 11.0 ppg over their last five games. 
 
Monday Night Seahawks:
  • This Monday's contest with LIU is the second time this season the Seahawks are playing on Monday. They dropped their first Monday night contest, 51-50, against Saint Francis U a week ago. Last year, Wagner went 3-6 in Monday tilts. 
  • In five Monday games, Janelle Mullen tallied 14.2 ppg while shooting 46.4 percent from the field and 40.6 percent from three-point range in 31.6 minutes. 
  • Alayshia Dailey, who started in eight of the nine Monday contests, nearly averaged double-figures in points (9.6 ppg) while pulling down 4.1 rebounds a game and also dishing out 3.3 helpers. 


Saturday Matchups:
  • The Green & White are 3-4 in seven Saturday contests this season, after defeating St. Francis Brooklyn, 74-66, on January 18. 
  • Three Seahawks are scoring in double-figures, led by freshman Alex Cowan, who is averaging 11.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 3.4 apg in 32.0 mpg. The Bowie, MD native is converting on 36.5 percent from the floor and leading the way with 15 made three-pointers, shooting at 50.0 percent clip. 
  • Junior Khaleah Edwards is next at 11.3 ppg, while pulling down 5.0 rpg and shooting 39.1 percent from the field and 31.4 percent from the outside. 
  • Sophomore Emilija Krista Grava rounds out the trio, netting 11.0 ppg while grabbing a team-high 5.5 rpg in just 26.0 minutes of action. 
  • As a whole, Wagner is tallying 62.0 ppg on Saturday, while hitting on 36.9 percent of its shots from the field while converting at a 76.0 percent clip at the charity stripe. 
  • The Seahawks have forced 20.7 turnovers on Saturdays and have averaged 15.0 apg during these games.

 
This & That:
  • In games decided by 10 points or less, Wagner is 4-2 this season.
  • When four Seahawks score in double-figures, like they did against St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday, the team is 3-0 on the season. 
  • The Green & White have entered halftime with a lead in three of its last four contests.  
  • Wagner posted a season-low eight turnovers on the road against Saint Francis U. It marked the first time since playing LIU on the road back on February 9, 2019, when the Seahawks had nine turnovers.
