Staten Island, NY – Trailing by just one point at halftime, the Wagner College men's basketball team was unable to pull out a victory in its final non-conference game of the season, dropping a 66-54 decision to Fairfield on Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks will begin Northeast Conference (NEC) play on Thursday, January 2, at Mount St. Mary's, and will enter the matchup with a 3-8 record, while the Stags improve to 4-7 with today's victory.
Wagner was led by graduate student
Curtis Cobb III, who scored 19 points on 8-18 shooting, while junior
Alex Morales was the second Seahawk in double figures with 11 points. Landon Taliaferro led four Stags in double figures with 17 points.
After Cobb tied the game at 43-43 with a jumper with 12:01 to play, Fairfield went on a 15-2 run to pull away.
The Seahawks fought back, but consecutive threes by junior
Chase Freeman and Cobb weren't enough to erase the deficit.
In the first half, both teams went back and forth, as neither team could establish a three-possession lead throughout the period. A layup by sophomore
Tyrone Nesby IV with 6:18 remaining gave Wagner its biggest lead of the half at 23-18, but the Stags answered to take a 28-27 lead at the midway point.
Wagner re-established the lead, as a jumper by freshman
Darion Jordan-Thomas and a three by Morales gave the Green and White a 38-35 advantage with 14:40 to play, before Fairfield answered to earn the win.
The Seahawks scored 27 points in both periods and held a 14-10 advantage in assists, but Fairfield held a 38-30 lead on the glass and 20-0 lead in free throws.
Wagner's first home conference game will be on Saturday, January 4, as the Seahawks will host Sacred Heart at 7:00 pm in a game that will be televised on SNY.
