Indianapolis, IN – The Wagner College women's basketball team concludes the first week of the 2019-20 season as they make their first-ever trip to Big East member, Butler, on Saturday afternoon, at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Tipoff is set for noon.

Wagner All-Time vs. Butler:
  • Saturday is the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
  • A win over Butler will be Wagner's first victory over a Big East opponent since January 20, 1986, in which they defeated Seton Hall, 77-69, under then-head coach and Wagner Hall of Famer, Gela Mikalauskas.

Last Time Out For Wagner:
  • The Seahawks opened the 2019-20 season on the road at No. 4/5 ranked University of Maryland Terrapins on Tuesday morning.
  • The Green & White dropped a 119-56 decision at the XFINITY Center.
  • Freshman guard and Bowie, MD native, Alex Cowan, was one of two Seahawks to finish in double figures as the first-year Seahawk guard went for a team-best 25 points on an efficient 7-of-14 shooting from the floor while connecting on 4-of-7 from beyond-the-arc. She also grabbed five rebounds in her 30 minutes of action.
  • Sophomore Emilija Krista Grava, a 2019 All-Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie Team selection a season ago, finished with 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting while logging 37 minutes of play.
  • The 25 point outburst from Cowan to go along with Krista Grava's 20 points marks the first time since November 14, 2014, that a Seahawk has scored 20 or more points in a season opener as former Seahawk standout, Jasmine Nwajei, netted 32 at Virginia Commonwealth.
  • Dating back to the 1999-00 season, this marks the first time that a pair of Seahawks have gone for 20 or more points in the same game.
  • Cowan, along with classmates Drayah Heyward, and freshman forward Katrice Jackson all made their debuts against the Terrapins.
  • Morgan Lenahan, who sat out the 2018-19 season due to injury, returned to the court and started for the first time since March 4, 2018, on the road at Saint Francis U. Lenahan dished out a team-best five assists.
  • Junior Khaleah Edwards, who played 24 minutes, tied Cowan for the team lead in rebounding this morning, also pulling down five caroms.

Scouting Butler:
  • The Bulldogs finished the 2018-19 season at 23-10 and posted an 11-7 mark in the Big East.
  • Butler fell to Creighton, 60-51, in the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament but was still postseason eligible as they qualified for the 2019 Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).
  • The Bulldogs fell to the University of Cincinnati, 72-65, in the Sweet 16.
  • Whitney Jennings led all players with 25 points while Tori Schickel went for 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in defeat.
  • Butler was picked to finish seventh in the Big East this season and senior guard Kristen Spolyar was recognized as a Preseason All-Big East player.
  • She was one of six guards named to the Preseason All-Big East team after Spolyar started in all 33 games and ranked second on the team in scoring at 13.2 points per game.
  • Saturday's contest with Wagner is the home and season opener for the Bulldogs, who went 14-4 at Hinkle Fieldhouse last year.
  • Butler was atop of the Big East in scoring defense (58.5 ppg), field goal percentage defense (.370), steals (356) and turnovers forced (18.4 pg) a season ago.

Next Up For Wagner
  • Wagner gears up for its home opener on Wednesday, November 13 as the Seahawks play host to Saint Peter's at 7:00 p.m from the Spiro Sports Center.
  • Keith Raad will be back calling all the action live on NEC Front Row.
