College Park, MD – The Wagner College women's basketball team travels to College Park, MD to meet the No.4/5 ranked University of Maryland Terrapins of the Big Ten at Xfinity Center on Tuesday, November 5. Tipoff is set for 11:00 AM.

Previewing The 2019-20 Seahawks
With the 2019-20 season beginning on Tuesday at No. 4/5 Maryland, fourth-year head coach Heather Jacobs returns three starters, including top returning scorer Emilija Krista Grava and added four newcomers to the roster.

2018-19 proved to be a step forward for Coach Jacobs and the program. Predicted to finish tenth in the league's preseason poll a year ago, the Seahawks doubled its Northeast Conference (NEC win total, finishing the year 10-20 overall and posting an 8-10 record in league tilts.

The Green & White qualified for the postseason for the first time in five years and first under Jacobs. At year's end, Coach Jacobs had mentored the NEC's Most Improved Player (Taylah Simmons) and an All-Rookie selection (Emilia Krista Grava).

Collectively, Wagner was among the top three programs in the circuit in several statistical categories as the Seahawks finished second in field-goal percentage (41.5 percent), assists (13.8), third in both free-throw percentage (72.4%) and rebounding defense (35.9).

The three key returners back for the 2019-20 season are juniors Alayshia Dailey and Khaleah Edwards along with sophomore Emilija Krista Grava.

In total, Coach Jacobs welcomes back ten players from last season's squad. Seniors Janelle Mullen and Jordan Hobson return as Mullen poured in 10.0 points per game and 2.5 rebounds in 21 contests while Hobson netted nearly 7.0 ppg and was fifth among all-NEC juniors in three-point field percentage a season ago.

Redshirt junior guard Morgan Lenahan, who missed the 2018-19 season due to injury, will step on the hardwood for the first time since the 2017-18 season. The 5-foot-11 guard logged 30.1 minutes in 28 games that season as she poured in 9.5 points a game while corralling 3.1 rebounds and dishing out 2.5 helpers a game.

Joining Lenahan are juniors guards Joellen How and Alayshia Dailey. How appeared in all 30 games a season ago and can be a factor on both ends of the floor. The same can be said for Dailey, who started in 26 of the 30 contests in 2018-19, as she averaged 7.3 points per game to go along with 3.1 assists per game, which tied for the team lead. The Severn, MD native finished third in the NEC in assist-to-turnover ratio last year.

Rounding out the returners are sophomores Amanda Pollard, Raven Pitt, and Nas Nigatu. All three will provide the Seahawks with depth off the bench.

Coach Jacobs and her staff bring in four newcomers this season in guards Alex Cowan, Drayah Heyward and forward Katrice Jackson. The Seahawks brought in LaNiya Miller, who will have to sit out the 2019-20 season after transferring from Stony Brook.

Cowan, a native of Bowie, MD, played for St. John's College High School in Washington D.C. She scored close to 700 points and led the Cadets to three titles.

Heyward was a four-year member of the Newark Arts High School basketball team as well as the track & field program. An all-conference First Teamer her entire high school career, the 5-foot-7 guard led the Jaguars to a conference championship in her first season while finishing her time scoring over 1,000 points.

Jackson, a 6-foot-0 forward, spent her freshman and sophomore years at Kickapoo High School in Springfield, MO before moving to Irmo, SC and enrolling at Dutch Fork. At Dutch Fork, she was a two-time All-Region selection. In her junior year, she averaged 14.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 1.5 apg and 1.8 steals a game.

2019-20 Schedule

A loaded non-conference slate for Wagner features contests against schools from the Big Ten (#4/5 Maryland), Big East (Butler), Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (Saint Peter's and Rider), Atlantic Sun (NJIT), Horizon League (Youngstown State), America East (UMBC and Stony Brook), Patriot League (Colgate) and Ivy League (Yale), the season begins in College Park, MD as the Green & White will take on the Terrapins on November 5.

Wagner's home opener is set for Nov. 13 when they welcome Saint Peter's as this contest is the prelude to two more contests at the Spiro Sports Center (Nov. 16 vs. UMBC; Nov. 19 vs. NJIT). The Seahawks will play Youngstown State (Nov. 23) for the first time in program history before coming home to tangle with Division II member, Staten Island (Nov. 30).

Three of the four contests in December will be away from the Spiro Sports Center as the lone home game is against Stony Brook (Dec. 15). Wagner will travel to Rider (Dec. 18), Colgate (Dec. 22), and closes out 2019 at Yale (Dec. 31).

The 18-game Northeast Conference (NEC) slate begins on the road on in Emmitsburg, MD as the Seahawks and Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers square off on Jan. 2. Wagner returns home on Jan. 4 to host Sacred Heart in a rematch of last season's NEC quarterfinal contest. For the first time in program history, Wagner will travel to North Andover, MA on February 15 to take on new league member, Merrimack.

The 2020 Northeast Conference Tournament will once again be played at the home of the higher seeds. The quarterfinals are set for Monday, March 9 followed by the semifinals on Thursday, March 12 and the championship game on Sunday, March 15.

Wagner In Season Openers
  • Wagner is 0-3 in season openers under Coach Jacobs
  • The Green & White's last win on opening day came on November 12, 2010, when the Seahawks defeated Army West Point, 52-48, in overtime, at the Spiro Sports Center.

Wagner All-Time vs. Maryland
  • Tuesday's contest is just the fourth all-time meeting between the two teams, with the Terrapins holding a 3-0 record.
  • These two programs last met back on November 16, 2014.

Family Reunion
  • Tomorrow's tipoff with the Terrapins will be a family reunion of sorts for a pair of Seahawks.
  • The Xfinity Center is no stranger to newcomers Alex Cowan and transfer LaNiya Miller. Cowan is the younger sister of UM senior guard, Anthony Jr. The Cowan siblings were recently featured in a Washington Post article by Emily Giambalvo entitled "Two Siblings, One Gym And A 'Dream Come True' for the Cowan Family." (Link)
  • Miller, who will be sitting out this season after transferring from Stony Brook, will get a chance to visit her sister, Diamond, who is a freshman on the 2019-20 women's team.

Next Up For Wagner
  • The Seahawks will close out the first week of the new season on Saturday, November 9 as the team will travel to Indianapolis, Indiana to tangle with Big East members, Butler
  • Tipoff from Hinkle Fieldhouse is set for noon.
