Newark, NJ – The Wagner College men's basketball team will take the short trip to Newark, NJ, on Saturday to take on NJIT in a 2:00 pm tipoff on ESPN+. The 1-2 Seahawks are coming off a historic performance in their home opener, a 97-67 victory over Wesley, while the Highlanders are also sitting at 1-2 following a 59-58 win over Cornell.
Cobb Makes History
Graduate student
Curtis Cobb III made history against Wesley, scoring 40 points and shooting 13-22 from the field. Cobb's performance marked the most points ever scored by a Wagner player at the Spiro Sports Center, beating Marcus Burton's 38 points from January 5, 2015 against Mount St. Mary's. The graduate student's performance also marked the 10
th 40-point game in Wagner history, while his 10 made three-pointers fell one short of tying the school record set by Joey Mundweiler at Monmouth on February 28, 2009. Overall, Cobb finished 10-15 from long range, with 22 of his points coming in the first half.
School Record
As a team, the Seahawks' 18 three-pointers against Wesley set a new school record, beating the previous mark of 16. Aside from Cobb's 10 threes, junior
Alex Morales and sophomore
Tyrone Nesby IV connected on three shots from long range, while sophomore
Will Martinez added two from downtown.
Morales' Hot Start
After being named an NEC PrimePerformer for his play during the first week of the season, junior
Alex Morales continues to impress. Morales has scored at least 15 points in all three games this season and is averaging 16.7 points on the year. Morales has also grabbed six rebounds in each game this season and dished out a season-high eight assists against the Wolverines.
The Series
Saturday's contest is the 22nd all-time meeting between these schools with the Highlanders leading the head-to-head series, 17-4. Last season, redshirt senior guard
Romone Saunders' 22 point performance was not enough, as NJIT overcame a 12-point first-half deficit in earning a 71-60 victory at the Spiro Sports Center.
Scouting The Highlanders
NJIT earned its first win of the season on a game-winning shot by senior Shyquan Gibbs, which gave the highlanders a 59-58 victory over Cornell. In their first two games of the season, NJIT fell to Colgate and Providence.
Next up for Wagner
Following Saturday's contest, Wagner will travel to Saint Peter's on Wednesday, November 20. Tip-off between the Seahawks and Peacocks is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
