Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College men's basketball team will play in front of its home crowd for the first time this season, as the new-look Seahawks welcome the Wesley Wolverines, who compete in NCAA Division III, to the Spiro Sports Center on Tuesday evening.
Morales' Productive First Week
In his first week as a Seahawk, junior
Alex Morales made an immediate impact. The 6-6 guard led Wagner with 17 points in the season-opener against Seton Hall, before pouring in 18 points in the Green and White's loss to Penn State. The New Jersey native leads the team with 17.5 points per game and averages six rebounds along with four assists following the first week of the season. For his efforts, Morales was named an NEC PrimePerformer.
Cobb Comes Alive
Graduate student
Curtis Cobb III showed his potential in Wagner's loss to the Nittany Lions on Saturday. Cobb led all scorers with 19 points on 8-17 shooting while playing 37 minutes. Cobb averaged averaged 8.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists for UMass in 2018-19 while seeing action in 23 games, with 12 starts.
Last Time Out
Wagner trailed just 37-30 at the halfway mark, but the short-handed Seahawks came up short in a 91-64 loss against Big 10 member Penn State on Saturday afternoon at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Limited to just eight players on the day, the gritty Seahawks jumped out to a 9-5 lead on a jumper by junior
Will Martinez four minutes into the contest.
After Penn State took the lead, back-to-back baskets by Cobb pulled Wagner to within one at 18-17 midway through the first half, while another Cobb three cut the deficit to 35-30 with one minute to play in the opening period.
The Series
Tuesday's matchup will be the first meeting all-time between Wagner and Wesley. Last year, the Seahawks played two Division III opponents in SUNY Cortland and New Rochelle, winning both games by a combined score of 195-115.
Scouting The Wolverines
Wesley opened its season with a 83-63 loss against Ramapo on Saturday. The Wolverines finished the 2018-2019 season with a 13-14 overall record, falling to top seet Gwynedd Mercy in the Atlantic East semifinals.
Next up For Wagner
The Seahawks will travel to NJIT on Saturday, November 16, to take on the Highlanders at 2:00 PM in a game that will be broadcast on ESPN+.
