Staten Island, NY – In between its Northeast Conference (NEC) schedule, the Wagner College softball team will take on two non-conference foes, both of whom hail from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), with a doubleheader vs. Saint Peter's on Tuesday followed by another twinbill against Rider on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the 8-19 Seahawks travel to Jersey City, NJ to face off with the Peacocks, who are coming into the week with a 3-21 record on the year, including an 0-4 mark in the MAAC, with game one set for 2:30 p.m., and game two to follow at 4:30 p.m. Last season, the Green and White swept Saint Peter's with a tightrope 1-0 victory in game one, followed by an 11-1 offensive outburst in the nightcap.
The following day, on Wednesday, Seahawks will play host to the Broncs of Rider, who stand at 8-20 overall and 1-5 in MAAC play. The first game of Tuesday's doubleheader is a 2:00 p.m. start, with game two set to follow at 4:00 p.m. Last season, Wagner also swept Rider, as the offense exploded for a season-high 20 runs on 26 hits across both games to carry the Seahawks to wins of 10-2 and 10-0.
The Seahawks are coming off of back-to-back road splits last weekend against Central Connecticut and Bryant in NEC play, picking up their first two conference victories of the season.
Against the Blue Devils, on Saturday, Wagner earned a 2-0 shutout win in game one, before falling in walk-off fashion by a score of 2-1 in the second game of the afternoon.
One day later, strong pitching by senior
Morgan Brown, combined with a five-run fifth inning, propelled the Green & White to a 7-3 win over Bryant in game one, which preceded a 12-4 setback in game two.
For her efforts during the weekend, Brown was named the
NEC Pitcher of the Week. In recording two complete-game victories, Brown struck out 15 batters in 14 innings while only allowing just three runs on 10 hits.
In NEC play this season, Brown leads the Seahawks with a 2.26 ERA and has gone the distance in all four of her conference starts. Through 31 NEC innings, the senior has struck out 27 while limiting the opposition to a .233 batting average.
Following these two mid-week doubleheaders, the Seahawks will return to NEC play by hosting league-leading Saint Francis U for two games on Saturday, April 14, starting at 1:00 pm.
