Elon, NC – The Wagner College softball team finished its first weekend of the 2017 season with a loss to Iona College on Sunday morning in Elon, NC. The Seahawks dropped the last game of the tournament 15-1 to the Gaels, who even their record at 4-4, while the Green and White falls to 0-5 on the young campaign.
Wagner's lone run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning, as freshman
Zoe Bender (Glen Rock, NJ / Glen Rock) got the frame started with a single to shortstop, before senior
Brianna Tredway (Downingtown, PA / Downingtown West) doubled to center field, advancing Bender to third. Sophomore
Karen Prihoda (Hamilton Square, NJ / The Lawrenceville School) then plated Bender with a single to shortstop, garnering her second RBI of the weekend.
The Gaels scored seven runs in the first inning and followed it up with two runs in the third and five in the fourth. Tori Danner led Iona with six RBIs on the day.
For Wagner, junior
Morgan Brown (Buckeye, AZ / Verrado) suffered her second loss of the season, while freshman
Amelia Van Orman (Orange, CA / Lutheran High School of Orange County) and sophomore
Ciera Luna (Highland, CA / Aquinas High School) also saw time in relief.
The Seahawks return to New York City for a matchup with St. John's in Queens on Wednesday, March 8, at 2:30 pm., before making the long trip to Utah, where they will play a total of nine games starting on March 10.
