Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

Cedar City, UT – Freshman infielder Kaila Smith (Millville, NJ/Millville), who entered today without a collegiate hit, hit two home runs, but it wasn't enough, as the Wagner softball team dropped a pair of contests on day one of the Beehive Classic, hosted by Utah State.

The Seahawks fell to the host Aggies, 13-4 and lost the second game to Southern Utah, 10-4. With the two setbacks, Wagner falls to 0-8 on the season.

Game 1 Recap – Utah State 13, Wagner 4

The Seahawks scored a season-high four runs in the first game of the afternoon but weren't able to keep the Aggies in check, falling 13-4.

Wagner scored the game's first runs in jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Karen Prihoda (Hamilton Square, NJ / The Lawrenceville School) led off with a double and was bunted over to third base by freshman Zoe Bender (Glen Rock, NJ / Glen Rock). With two outs, sophomore transfer Stefanie Aplin (Nesconset, NY / Smithtown East / Georgian Court University) came through with a RBI single up the middle, scoring Prihoda. Senior Brianna Tredway (Downingtown, PA / Downingtown West) drove in Aplin with a double to left-center field.

The Aggies answered back with six runs spread across three innings before the Seahawks were able to cut into the deficit in the top half of the fourth inning. A single by freshman Amelia Van Orman (Orange, CA / Lutheran High School of Orange County), followed by Smith's first collegiate home run to left center field, doubling the Seahawks' run total for the game. Smith's homer was the second for Wagner this season, both scored by first-year players.

Utah State rounded out the game with two runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth for a 13-4 final score. In the circle, Van Orman was charged with the loss after going 1.1 innings, while junior Morgan Brown (Buckeye, AZ / Verrado) pitched the remaining three frames.

The Aggies were led by Riley Plogger's four RBIs and three RBIs from Paxton Provost, while Katie Schroeder picked up the complete-game victory.

Game 2 Recap – Southern Utah 10, Wagner 4

Wagner scored in the first inning for the second straight game and matched its run total from earlier in the day in dropping a 10-4 decision to the Thunderbirds.

After Prihoda had been hit by a pitch to start the game, Bender followed it up with a single, before Aplin moved the runner over to third with a fielder's choice. An error by the Thunderbirds' pitcher allowed Tredway to reach and Prihoda to score, making the score 1-0.

The Thunderbirds evened the score in the bottom half of the first and tacked on three runs in the third.

In the fourth inning, a Van Orman walk set up Smith's third hit and second longball of the day, this one a two-run shot. Southern Utah plated six runs in the fourth before a Prihoda single in the top of the sixth gave the Seahawks their fourth run of the game.

Senior McKaleigh Goodale (Bradenton, FL / Lakewood Ranch) suffered the loss in game two.

The Green and White will be back in action tomorrow with two more games scheduled against Bradley and Utah State, starting at noon.
