Wagner College Shootout ResultsÂ
Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College men's track and field team returned to action on Friday for the Wagner College Shootout, held at Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex.
Sophomore thrower
Lutfi Pocesta (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner) set a new school record in the weight throw with a launch of 16.21 meters en route to a second-place finish. The previous record holder, John Garrish, held the mark since February 4, 2012, when he posted a throw of 16.17 meters. Pocesta also places among the top-ten in the shot put with a launch of 12.64 meters. Pocesta's finish today is currently the third-best on the Northeast Conference (NEC) Indoor Performance List.Â
For the second straight week, the reigning NEC Rookie of the Week
Dylan Beard (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Spalding) came within .01 seconds away from setting a new school record, placing first in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.14. Â In the triple jump, senior
Isaiah Gills (Bel Air, MD/Harford Technical) took home second-place honors with a leap of 13.77 meters. Gills is now second on the NEC Performance List with his performance this afternoon.Â
In the high jump, senior
Hamza Ahmed (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) placed fifth with a distance of 1.89 meters, tying him with fellow teammate sophomore
Justin Mirfield (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Technical) for second on the NEC Performance List. Mirfield placed sixth in the event at 1.84 meters. Senior long jumper
Devon Jones (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) took home third place accolades in the meet, finishing at 6.49 meters. With his total today, Jones is now ranked fourth on the NEC Performance List. Mirfield placed fourth at 6.35 meters (ranks seventh in the conference).Â
In the 60 meters, a pair of Seahawk teammates finished second and third, respectively, as
Jordan Davenport (Naples, FL/Gulf Coast) and junior
Michael Songore (Marondera, Zimbabwe/Peterhouse High School) posted times of 7.08 and 7.14, respectively. Â Senior
Brandon Peoples (Abington Township, PA//Archbishop Wood/Milford Academy) rounded out the top-ten performances in the event for Wagner, clocking in at 7.22. In the 300 meters, Songore nearly tied the Wagner indoor record when finished third at 35.62. The current record holder, Andrew Hepkins, set the mark at 35.00 back in 1996. Senior
Thomas Schwannecke (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City) placed ninth at 36.04.
Junior
Quincy Rasin (New Bern, NC/New Bern) took home third place in the 600 meters with a time of 1:23.49. Â In the 3000 meters, NEC Male Cross Country Freshman of the Year,
Liam Harris (Cork, Ireland/Kent School) and junior
Joseph Abbatiello (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) finished second and third in the 3000 meters, crossing the finish line in 8:31.94 and 8:35.42, respectively. Both times are currently one and two on the NEC Performance List for the event.Â
Rounding out the Green & White's performance at the Wagner College Shootout was a second-place performance from the sprint medley relay team, made up of Davenport, Peoples, Beard and freshman
Jonathan Besselink (Kingston, Ontario/Holy Cross Catholic Secondary), posting a time of 3:35.45.
The Wagner men's indoor track & field is next scheduled to compete in the new year as they will be in action as they host the Wagner College Invitational at Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex on January 6, 2017. Â
