Jasmine Nwajei, the No. 2 scorer in the nation last season at 24.8 points per game, who also ranked No. 6 nationally in steals per game (3.28) en route to earning
First-Team All-Northeast Conference (NEC) and
Third-Team All-Met honors, has been named to the 2015 R. William Jones Cup team that will compete in Taipei, Taiwan July 26-31.
The Jones Cup, which will be televised nationally on FOX sports, is an international basketball tournament that has been held annually in Taiwan since 1977. It was named in honor of basketball promoter Renato William Jones, who was one of the founders of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). Like the Olympics and the FIBA Basketball World Cup, it has both men's and women's teams.
On Wednesday, July 22, Nwajei, who was also a member of the NEC All-Defensive Team, embarked on the approximate 15-hour, 7,800-mile trip to Taiwan.
"I'm very excited about this trip, working with my new teammates and representing the U.S.A.," said Nwajei on Tuesday. "I've done a lot of traveling, mostly through basketball, but this by the longest trip of my life by far. I'm eager to get to Tawain, to improve my game and experience a new culture. Eager is probably the best word to describe how I feel."
The Jones Cup, which has been dominated by the U.S., South Korean, and Taiwanese teams in recent history, can only be represented by one team per country, which could be its national team, youth team, club team, or an all-star selection, except for the hosts Chinese Taipei, which could opt to have two teams.
In addition to national teams, the Jones Cup also invites professional club, collegiate and national teams from around the world, although the participants are mainly from the Asian and North American regions. The U.S. team is coached by Travis McAveneam.
"I'm excited for Jasmine to have this opportunity to represent the United States in the Jones Cup," said head coach
Lisa Cermignano. "The experience that she will gain, both on and off the floor, during her time in Taiwan will be invaluable for her and our program. She will be competing with, and against, top competition, while building lifetime memories at the same time."
