Brooklyn, NY – The Wagner College softball team dropped a 5-4 decision in the second game of its doubleheader at LIU Brooklyn Sunday afternoon after
dropping the opener by a 10-4 count.
In game two, the Seahawks fell behind early when LIU took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and trailed 5-0 before scoring four runs in the seventh inning but were unable to push across the tying run.
With the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, junior catcher
Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA/ Fountain Valley) reached on a fielder's choice ground ball to the shortstop, who threw out
Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA/ Lynnwood) at second, but the runner from third scored to make it a 5-1 game with two outs and runners on the corners. Sophomore
McKaleigh Goodale (Bradenton, FL/ Lakewood Ranch), who played second base in the second game, then nailed a three-run home run on a 1-2 pitch to cut the deficit to 5-4 but this is as close as the Seahawks would get.
Goodale finished the second game 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and one run scored. Sophomore centerfielder
Brianna Tredway (Downington, PA/ Downington West) went 2-for-3 in game two, and 3-for-6 overall in the doubleheader, with two RBI.
Parker added a hit in the seventh inning to complete a 2-for-3 game. Senior first baseman
Beth Lewis (Ashburn, VA/ Stone Bridge), sophomore designated hitter
Taylor Beeson (Mesa, AZ/ Red Mountain), and freshman left fielder
Maite Reece (Covina, CA/ Gabrielino) each contributed a hit as well.
In the circle, senior
Samantha Bedker (Phoenix, AZ/ Sandra Day O'Connor) pitched a complete game with only three walks and two strikeouts.
The Seahawks, who are now 5-10 overall and 0-2 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play, are right back at it on Monday, March 30, hosting a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against NEC member Fairleigh Dickinson. This twinbill vs. the Knights was postponed from Saturday due to inclement weather conditions.
Fairleigh Dickinson opened its first day of conference play on Sunday, March 29, against Central Connecticut, dropping both games, in falling to 3-11 overall and 0-2 in NEC. Last season, the Seahawks lost both games of the doubleheader to the Knights by scores of 5-2 and 3-2, respectively.
