Lewisburg, PA – Emily Kookogey tallied four goals while Gretchen Richter scored three times and Bucknell held off Wagner 9-7 in the 2015 season opener for both teams on a chilly afternoon in Central Pennsylvania.
Accounting for two points apiece for the Seahawks with one goal and one assist each were junior attacker, co-captain and 2014 Second-Team All-Northeast Conference (NEC) selection
Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview), along with junior midfielder
Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ/Manasquan), the 2014 NEC Defensive Player of the Year.
Seven different Seahawks registered goals on the day. In addition to Tumolo and Gegan, goal-scorers for Wagner included junior midfielder
Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan), senior midfielder
Jessica Mills (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township), sophomore attacker
Olivia Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), a 2014 NEC All-Rookie Team member, along with a pair of freshmen midfielders seeing their first collegiate action in
April Simmons (Branford, CT/Branford) and
Lauren Ednie (Verona, NJ/Verona).
The Bison jumped out to a 3-0 lead midway through the first half before the Green & White struck for a pair of goals to make it a one-goal game. Mills notched the first tally of the 2015 campaign for Wagner by sinking a free-position shot at the 15:56 mark before Simmons made it a 3-2 game with 13:16 left before intermission, after receiving a feed from Tumolo.
Consecutive goals by Kookogey again made it a three-goal differential at 5-2, before Streilein found the net off of a Gegan assist with 7:31 to go in the half to draw the Seahawks to within two goals at 5-3. Bucknell's Maddy Molinari scored the final goal of the half at the 4:50 mark to send the Bison into halftime with a 6-3 lead.
Kookogey then scored her third and fourth goals of the game, both on free-position shots, the latter with 17:30 to go, to give the Bison their biggest lead of the game at 8-3. Wagner fought back with goals by Tumolo and Fay, both on free-positions, to make it an 8-5 game. After Richter tallied an unassisted goal with 6:05 left to make it 9-5, Wagner notched, the game's final two goals, an unassisted score by Gegan at 3:13, before Ednie rounded out the day's scoring with goal at the 0:04-second mark to fashion the final score of 9-7.
Bucknell held a 19-12 advantage in ground balls and a slim 10-7 edge in draw controls. Junior
Katie Ferraro (Owings Mill, MD/McDonogh) recorded 10 saves in goal for the Seahawks while Elizabeth Duswalt registered six saves in goal for Bucknell in notching the win.
Wagner, which earned the No. 2 seed in the 2014 NEC Championships and defeated Robert Morris in the semifinals before falling to No. 1-seed Bryant in the champonshio game, is next in action on Saturday, February 14 when the Seahawks play host to American University in the home opener at Hameline Field with first draw slated for 12:00 p.m. The Eagles, like Bucknell, are members of the Patriot League.
