Staten Island, NY – Sophomore guard
Jasmine Nwajei (Rockaway Park, NY/Murry Bergtraum) tossed in 22 points and freshmen
Tanasia Russell (Vineland, NJ/Vineland)
Sofia Roma (Richmond Hill, NY/Nazareth Regional) added career highs with 14 and 11 points, respectively, but it was Northeast Conference (NEC)-leading Central Connecticut Blue Devils who held the upper hand in posting an 83-67 win over the Seahawks this afternoon.
Tejahne Malone was an inside force throughout for the Blue Devils, scoring 22 points while pulling down 16 rebounds, which included a perfect 10-of-10 shooting from the free throw line, in recording a double-double. Kayla Miller contributed 20 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the floor while adding 14 points.
In dropping its sixth straight, Wagner falls to 4-16 on the season, 2-7 in NEC play while Blue Devils move to 8-1 in the conference and 12-8 overall.
For Russell, an explosive and athletic 5-8 guard, her 14-point outing, which came on 7-of-12 shooting, eclipsed her previous career high which was a 10-point outing vs. Monmouth back on November 29. Nicknamed"Pogo," a moniker that helps describe her uncanny leaping ability, Russell ranked fifth in the state of New Jersey with a 28.5 points per game average as a senior last season at Vineland High School, en route to being named the
South Jersey Times Salem/Cumberland County Player of the Year.
In addition to her career-high 11 points, which topped her previous career best of eight at Saint Francis U (1/3), the mobile 6-2 Roma grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, which left her just one shy of recording her first career double-double.
Nwajei's 22-point outing moves her up to 983 career points, leaving her just 17 points away from becoming the 25th player in Wagner history to reach 1,000-point plateau. The 5-8 guard will try to reach this milestone on Monday, February 2, which is her birthday, when the Seahawks host the Pioneers of Sacred Heart in the first meeting of the season between the schools.
