Men’s Lacrosse Falls At Mount St. Mary’s 9-5

Emmitsburg, MD – The Wagner College men's lacrosse team received two goals and one assist from redshirt freshman Patrick McMenamin (Longport, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) and sophomore Billy Battaglia (Madison, NJ/Madison) but Mount St. Mary's parlayed a 14-1 advantage in faceoffs en route to a 9-5 Northeast Conference (NEC) victory today at sun-splashed Waldron Family Stadium.

Mount's Mark Hojnoski led all scorers with five points on three goals and two assists while Kyle McDonough added two goals and one assist. Mike Kelmer had the hot hand in the faceoff circle for the Mount, as took all 15 faceoffs, winning 14. Goalie Chris Klaiber came up with 15 saves in posting the win for the Mountaineers.

With his three-point outing, Patrick McMenamin assumes the Seahawk team leader in points with 28. The 5-6, 160-pound midfielder also leads the Seahawks in goals (16) and assists (12). For Battaglia, today's three-point outing came on the heels of a career-high four-point effort on April 15 at Sacred Heart, when he dished out a career-high three assists to go with one goal.  Buoyed by his combined three goals and four assists in his last two contests, Battaglia is now up to five goals and eight assists on the season, with those 13 points ranking him fourth on the team in scoring.

Sophomore Daniel Valencia (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) led the Seahawks defensively, returning to his home state to lead the team in ground balls with four while tying for team-high honors with two caused turnovers. Senior David Szilezy (Apex, NC/Cardinal Gibbons), and sophomore Sean Gray (Taberbacle, NJ/Seneca) were also credited with a pair of caused turnovers each.

McMenamin's first goal of the game, an unassisted tally with 10:16 to go in the first quarter, tied the game at 1-1. The Mountaineers went on to score four of the next five goals in taking a 5-2 halftime lead.

The Seahawks drew to within two goals at the 13:40 mark of the third quarter when McMenamin scored off a Battaglia assist. This is as close as the Green & White would get, however, as the Mount embarked on a 4-0 run bridging the third and fourth quarter s in building a comfortable 9-3 lead.

Junior Cory Santor (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) got one back on an unassisted goal with 12:30 to play to pull Wagner to within 9-4. That's the way the score remaining all the way until the 3:25 mark when Battaglia notched the game's final goal, converting on an extra-man opportunity (EMO).

For the game, Mount held a 39-29 edge in shots and led by a 38-26 count in ground balls. The Mount was 1-of-2 on EMOs while the Seahawks were 1-of-5 in this category.The Mountaineers were successful on 15-of-19 clears and Wagner was 17-of-22 on clears. Mount committed 17 turnovers on the afternoon while the Green & White turned the ball over 22 times.

The win was the first of the season for the Mount, who now stand at 1-14, 1-4 in the NEC. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 2-10 overall, 0-5 in league play.

Wagner concludes the 2014 season on Saturday, April 26 when the Seahawks travel to Bryant for a 1:00 pm faceoff.
