Baltimore, MD - The Wagner women's lacrosse team dropped a 10-5 decision at UMBC on a snowy afternoon today at UMBC Stadium, despite a two-goal effort from sophomore
Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan), as the Seahawks fall to 3-5 on the season while the Retrievers improve to 5-4.
Adding one goal apiece for the Green & White were sophomores
Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) and
Stephanie Peterson (Vernon Township, NJ/Vernon) along with freshman
Nicole Luzzi (Branford, CT/Branford).
Sophomore
Shea Gegan (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan) tallied an assist for the Seahawks, which came on Wagner's first goal of the game, by Fay, with 15:48 left in the first half that tied the game at 1-1. That's he way the score remained until the 8:07 mark of the opening half when Rachel Benzing connected for UMBC, off a Kirsten Bilney feed, that ignited a 4-0 Retriever run during a span of 4:29 that made it a 5-1 game.
Luzzi stopped the bleeding for the Seahawks with an unassisted tally with 1:42 left to make it a 5-2 game at halftime.
After Jennie Milligan opened the second-half scoring with a goal at 26:43 off a pass from Abby Wilson, which made it 6-2, Fay fired home her second goal of the game at 22:29 to slice the deficit in half at 6-3. This is as close as Wagner would get, however, as an Ally Carpenter score at 13:32 began a 3-0 UMBC run that built the lead to 9-3 with 9:15 left.
Peterson's goal at 6:38 was followed by a Wilson score at 4:00 which made it 10-4. Tumolo then rounded out the day's scoring with a goal 15 seconds later to fashion the final score at 10-5.
Wilson, Bilney and Alyssa Semones finished with two goals apiece to pace UMBC while Wilson added two assists in finishing with a game-high four points.
Sophomore
Katie Ferraro (Ownings Mill, MD/McDonogh),
the reigning Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, recorded 12 saves in goal for the Seahawks during a return trip to her home state. Kelly Gielner had three saves in registering the victory for the Retrievers.
UMBC out-shot Wagner 30-15 and won 14-of-17 draw controls while Wagner led in ground balls, 13-11. The Seahawks were successful on 1-of-3 free-position shots while the Retrievers were 0-1.
The Seahawks will look to return to their winning way on Saturday, March 29 when they travel to Delaware St. to meet the Hornets in a 4:00 pm contest.
