Staten Island, NY – Corey Santor (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) and
Paul DeVita (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) scored two goals apiece but it was not enough as the Wagner men's lacrosse team found itself in an early 3-0 hole and would up on the short end of a 12-8 decision to Saint Joseph's in the Northeast Conference (NEC) opener for both teams.
With the loss, the Seahawks, who posted an epic four-overtime win over Monmouth on Wednesday, fall to 1-2 on the season, 0-1 in the NEC while the Hawks improve to 2-2 on the season, 1-0 in the conference.
St. Joseph's scored at the 10:59 mark in the first quarter, when Matt Blasco got one past senior
Nicholas Gibaldi (Rocky Point, NY / Rocky Point) for the first goal of the game. Both teams held steady until there was 33 seconds left in the first, and Matt Dougherty of the Hawks scored off of a timeout. With four seconds remaining, Dougherty found the net again putting Wagner in a 3-0 hole at the end of the first.
DeVita helped the Seahawks get back in the game at the beginning of the second quarter, scoring twice within a span of 1:11. DeVita's two unassisted scores made it 3-2 before three-straight goals by St. Joe's, putting the game at 6-2 with 6:49 left in the first half.
Wagner would cut the lead to three at the 3:31 mark in the second quarter, when
Griffen Leclaire (White Rock, British Columbia / Toronto, Hill Academy) scored from
Patrick McMenamin (Longport, NJ / St. Augustine Prep), sending the Seahawks into the half down 6-3.
St. Joseph's scored the first two goals in the second half, putting Wagner in a 8-3 hole halfway through the third.
David DeCirce (Clarence, NY / Clarence) put a dent into the lead at the 5:40 mark, but St. Joseph's added a goal of their own to make it 9-4 at the end of the third.
The Green and White fought back in the fourth quarter, scoring four of the next five goals in the frame, making it a 10-8 game at the 7:37 mark. The Hawks showed their strength in the last seven minutes, holding Wagner scoreless and netting two goals of their own to make the final 12-8.
For the game, Santor and DeVita led the way with two goals each.
Patrick McMenamin had one goal and two assists, while twin brother William had one goal and one assist, and went 10-20 on faceoffs. Gibaldi totaled six saves on the afternoon.
The Seahawks are next in action on Saturday, March 8th when they host Detroit in a 1:00 pm contest at Hameline Field.
