Photo by Molly RileyCollege Park, MD – The Maryland Terrapins, who reached the 2014 Final Four and are ranked No. 8 in the Preseason AP Poll and No. 10 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, used a pressing defense in building an early lead en route to a 97-24 win over Wagner on Sunday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who battled the VCU Rams of the Atlantic 10 to the wire in a 85-74 road loss in Friday night's season opener, were victims of 33 turnovers today which led to a host of fast-break opportunities as the Lady Terps placed six players in double figures.
Junior guard
Jordyn Peck, who scored 20 at VCU, paced Wagner in scoring with seven points while promising 6-2 freshman post player
Sofia Roma pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard
Jasmine Nwajei (Rockaway Park, NY/Murry Bergtraum) who poured in a career-high 32 points at VCU, scored five points today while sophomore guard
Lyndsay Rowe (South River, NJ/South River) added four.
Kiara Leslie led Maryland's balanced scoring effort with 11 points while four different players added 10 points apiece for the Lady Terps who are competing in their first season as a member of the Big 10 Conference after being a member of the ACC since 1953. In its final season in the ACC last year, Maryland went 28-7 and made an appearance in the NCAA Final Four.
Wagner was the second straight Northeast Conference (NEC) foe that Maryland has faced, as the Terrapins defeated Mount St. Mary's 109-45 in their season opener on Friday.
The Green & White are next in action on Tuesday, November 25 when the Seahawks host another first-year Big 10 member in the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, who are coming off of the 2014 WNIT Championship. Guided by Hall of Fame head coach C. Vivian Stringer, Rutgers will be making their first-ever appearance on Grymes Hill.
