Brooklyn Heights, NY - The Wagner women's basketball team guns for its third Northeast Conference (NEC) win of the season when the Seahawks conclude a stretch of four straight road games at St. Francis Brooklyn in a 7:00 pm tip-off tonight at the Pope Physical Education Center.
This matchup between the Seahawks and the Terriers marks the 71
st all-time meeting between the schools and St. Francis Brooklyn holds a 52-18 lead in the series. Last season, the teams split their two meetings with each team winning on the other's home floor. On January 12, 2013, the Terriers escaped the Spiro Sports Center with a 72-66 victory while the Seahawks earned a 52-48 win at the Pope Center on February 25, 2013.
After posting an impressive 79-70 home win over Sacred Heart on January 13, the Seahawks have dropped three consecutive games, including an 89-78 decision at Mount St. Mary's (1/20), and a 74-63 loss at Robert Morris (1/25). Most recently, Wagner fell at Sacred Heart, as the Pioneers posted a 63-46 victory on Saturday.
The 2013-2014 Seahawks are one of the nation's youngest teams with nine of the 11 players being in either their first or second seasons of eligibility. The Wagner roster is comprised of five true freshmen, one redshirt freshman, two true sophomores, one redshirt sophomore, zero juniors, and two seniors.
The Seahawks are led by their explosive backcourt combination of 5-6 sophomore guard
Jordyn Peck (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) and 5-8 freshman point guard
Jasmine Nwajei (Rockaway Park, NY/Murry Bergtraum) who are averaging 22.0 and 20.7 points, respectively, in NEC games with Peck ranked as the league's No. 3 scorer and Nwajei at No. 5. Overall, Peck checks in at 18.7 points per game, which is tied for third in the NEC, while Nwajei is the NEC's leading freshman scorer at 14.8, and is the reigning and three-time NEC Rookie of the Week.
In the frontcourt, redshirt sophomore center
Ugo Nwaigwe (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) is developing into one of the NEC's top post players. In seven NEC games, the 6-3 Nwaigwe is averaging 8.7 points and 9.1 rebounds while shooting a robust 66% from the floor, and is coming off of her second double-double in the last three games, an 11-point, 14-rebound effort at Sacred Heart. The 14 boards set a career high. Also the NEC's leading shot-blocker, Nwaigwe's 3.11 average ranks ninth nationally. Nwaige has blocked 56 shots this season in just 18 games, a figure that is tied for third on the Wagner single-season blocked shots list. She is now up to 72 blocks for her career which, in just 53 career games, places Nwaigwe fifth on the Seahawk all-time career list.
Freshman guard
Lyndsay Rowe (South River, NJ/St. John Vianney) has shown a maturity which belies her youth all season long. The 5-8 lefty is scoring at a 7.7 ppg. clip and is the only Seahawk to start all 18 games. In the last five games, second-year head coach
Lisa Cermignano has gone with the same starting five, a four-guard look of Peck, Nwajei, Rowe,
Jazmine Hamlet (Manhattan, NY/Francis Lewis), along with Nwaigwe at center. Broken down by class years, this starting five features two true freshmen (Nwajei, Rowe), one redshirt freshman (Hamlet), one sophomore (Peck), and one redshirt-sophomore (Nwaigwe).
NOTES
One-Two Punch of Peck, Nwajei Continue Torrid Pace
This young, dynamic backcourt combination of sophomore shooting guard
Jordyn Peck and freshman point guard
Jasmine Nwajei, is sure to give opposing coaches headaches the rest of this season as well as in ensuing years. Overall, Peck is tied for third in the NEC at 18.7 points per game while Nwajei's average is up to 14.8, far and away the highest scoring average among all NEC freshmen. Peck has scored 20 or more points in six of the Seahawks' seven NEC games, and is now third scoring at 22.7 per NEC outing. Nwajei, who has played in six NEC games, is hitting for 20.7 points per game in league play, which ranks fifth.
Peck and Nwajei Over 20 Points Each Five Times
Jordyn Peck and
Jasmine Nwajei have scored 20 or more points in the same game five times this season, and as a result, the Seahawks were 3-2 in those contests.
