Staten Island, NY – Tamika Guz and Cleandra Roberts scored 21 and 18 points, respectively to lead the LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team to a 61-41 Northeast Conference (NEC) victory over Wagner at the Spiro Sports Center.
The victory for the Blackbirds avenged a 74-70 January 14 home loss to the Seahawks and improves their record to 6-20 overall, 3-12 in the NEC while the Green & White fall to 2-24, 1-14 in league play.
Senior forward
Marie-Laurence Archambault (Montreal, Quebec/ Montmorency) and sophomore forward
Stephanie Blais (Sherbrooke, Quebec/ Montmorency) paced the Seahawks with nine points apiece. Senior center
Chanez Robinson (Newark, NJ/ Shabazz/ Norteheastern) added eight points while senior guard
Veronick Fournier (Gatineau, Quebec/ Montmorency) chipped in with five points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Blackbirds outshot Wagner 43 percent to 28 percent and led in the rebounding department 42 to 29 while coming up with 12 steals in forcing 19 Seahawk turnovers. The Blackbirds' effectiveness offensively in the low post was a major key to their success, particularly early in the game. In building a 29-19 halftime lead, LIU Brooklyn enjoyed a 24-4 advantage in points in the paint and for the game the Blackbirds led in this category 38-12.
Guz, a 6-2 senior center was particularly potent inside as her 21 points came on 9-of-17 shooting and a 3-of-6 effort from the free throw line while also pulling down nine rebounds and blocked two shots. The Seahawks appeared to be in good shape early in taking their biggest lead of the game at 14-10 on a pair of Blais free throws at the 9:59 mark of the opening half. The Blackbirds then put the clamps on defensively which led to some easy offensive chances in closing the half with a 19-5 run.
LIU Brooklyn appeared to be on its way to putting the game away six minutes in the second half as the Blackbirds enjoyed 39-26 edge at that point. An Archambault three-pointer at 13:32 followed by a Fournier layup at 13:02 provided the Seahawks with five quick points, making it a 39-31 game. But LIU Brooklyn answered with a 14-4 run over the next 18 minutes in building an 18-point lead at 53-35 with 4:07 left which essentially sealed the game.
Wagner is back in action on Monday, February 25 as the Seahawks make the short trek to St. Francis Brooklyn with tip-off set for 7:00 pm.
