Women’s Lacrosse Kicks Off Big Weekend At Manhattan College At 6 pm Today

The Wagner College women's lacrosse team looks to improve to 2-0 today when the Seahawks travel to Manhattan College to meet the Jaspers with the first draw control slated for 6:00 pm in the first of two games this weekend as the Green & White play host to Saint Joseph's on Sunday, February 24 at 1:00 pm.
 
Manhattan, of the MAAC, enters today's play with a 0-1 record nearly two weeks on the sideline following a season-opening 15-5 loss at Rutgers on February 10. 
 
Today's game marks the 18th meeting all-time between the two program and the Seahawks lead the series 11-6, including a 16-9 victory last year on Staten Island. Last season's win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Green & White vs. Manhattan.
 
Atlantic 10 members Saint Joseph's will enter Sunday's affair with a 1-0 record having defeated Niagara 13-5 in its season opener on February 17 in Philadelphia.
 
The Seahawks, meanwhile, got their 2013 season off to a great start with a 21-2 home victory over Delaware St. on February 16. Sophomore attacker Jessica  Mills (Vernon Township, NJ/ Vernon) exploded  for six goals and three assists in carrying Wagner t the win over the Hornets and, two days later, was named Northeast (NEC) Conference Player of the Week.
 
The six goals, three assists and nine points all represent career highs for the crafty 5-4 Garden State native who struck for the initial goal of the season just 1:24 into the game. Later in the opening half, Mills tallied two goals in a span of 13 seconds to stake the Seahawks to a 14-1 halftime lead and went to record another hat trick in half number two. Mills' six goals are the most by a Seahawk since Carolyn Clark tickled twine seven times vs. Monmouth (4/13/12).
 
Freshmen Stephanie Peterson(Vernon, NJ/ Vernon Township) Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY/ C.W. Baker) and Casey McCarthy (Cypress, TX/ Cy-Fair) each registered a hat trick in as the Wagner women's lacrosse team defeated Delaware State 21-2 in the 2013 Season Opener.

The Hornets, who were playing the first-ever women's lacrosse game in school history, received goals from Emily Peets and Miranda Hawkins.

In addition to her six goals, Mills assisted on three others to give her a career-high nine points in the game. Fifth-year head coach Cristina Curiale unveiled her promising 12-member recruiting class, many of whom played large roles. In addition to the trio of rookies who recorded hat tricks, five other Wagner freshmen found the scoring column.

Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/ Manasquan) notched three points on two goals and an assist. Adding two points apiece were Fay's high school teammate Shea Gegan (Manasquan, NJ/ Manasquan) and Tori McGrath (Albany, NY/ Bethlehem Central), who struck for one goal and one assist each as well as Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/ Clearview Regional).

All told, the 12 freshmen, who comprise virtually half of the Seahawk 25-person roster, combined to score 19 points on 13 goals and six assists. Veterans who found the back of the cage for the Green & White included junior Michela Galante (Maplewood, NJ/ Maplewood), with one goal and one assist, and senior Jillian Maloney (Mahopac, NY/ Mahopac) who had one goal. Other returnees to score were senior Erika Bulken (Baldwinsville, NY/ C. W. Baker) and sophomore Chantel Agnew (Poolesville, MD/ Poolesville), who added one assist each.

Another freshman, Katie Ferraro (Owings Mill, MD/ McDonogh) earned the start in goal and came up with three saves while playing the first half before giving way to sophomore Shannon Sweeney (Madsion, NJ/ Madison) who picked up one save.
