Staten Island, NY – Three Seahawks were in double figures, led by 14 points and seven rebounds from redshirt-senior
Chanez Robinson (Newark, NJ/ Malcolm X. Shabazz), but the Wagner College women's basketball team fell to Central Connecticut, 65-54, at Spiro Sports Center on Monday afternoon. In the defeat, the Seahawks fall to 2-23 and 1-13 in the NEC, while the Blue Devils improve to 12-12 and 6-7 in conference play.
Robinson's 14 points tied her career-high. Freshman
Jordyn Peck (Shaker Heights, OH/ Shaker Heights) added 11 for the Seahawks, and sophomore
Stephanie Blais (Sherbrooke, Quebec/ Montmorency) chipped in 10 for Wagner.
The first half was a defensive battle, with the Seahawks trailing 14-6 with 5:22 remaining in the opening stanza. From that point, Wagner rattled off an 11-0 run over the next 3:01. Senior
Marie-Laurence Archambault (Montreal, Quebec/ Montmorency) drilled a three, and the Green & White followed it up by making eight straight free throws to take a 17-14 lead.
CCSU would go on to score six of the next seven points, before Archambault hit a three with four seconds remaining in the half to send Wagner into the locker room up, 21-20.
Wagner scored five of the first seven points in the second half, going up 29-22 on Blais' second three-pointer in under two minutes with 17:42 to play. The Seahawks would keep rolling, making five of their first seven shots in the second half to extend the lead to 34-26 with 14:56 remaining.
The Blue Devils then went on an 8-0 run of their own to recapture the lead, holding a 36-34 advantage at the 11:46 mark. The teams then traded shots over the next few possessions, with Wagner going back ahead on a Peck three with 10:09 to play, giving the Seahawks a 42-40 lead.
From there, CCSU went on a 13-3 run to extend the margin to eight, leading 53-45 with 6:15 to play. The Seahawks would answer back with a Peck three and two Blais free throws to cut the deficit to 53-50 going into the game's final media timeout with 3:40 to play.
The Seahawks were unable to pull any closer out of the stoppage, though, as CCSU grabbed 10 of its last 12 points at the free-throw line to extend the margin to the final score of 65-54.
Wagner returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1:00 pm, when the Green & White host LIU Brooklyn for Senior Day at Spiro Sports Center.
