Stephanie Blais (Sherbrooke, Quebec/ Montmorency) tossed in a game-high 14 points while seniors
Marie-Laurence Archambault (Montreal, Quebec/ Montmorency) and
Chanez Robinson, Newark, NJ/ Shabazz/ Northeastern), along with sophomore
Jacqui Thompson (Southampton, PA/ St. Basil Academy), scored eight apiece but it was Bryant that came away with a 71-53 win.
The Bulldogs improve to 9-14 on the season, 5-7 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while Wagner's season record falls 2-22, 1-12 in league play.
The Seahawks got out to a solid start in this one as they led 6-2 after five minutes of play thanks to three-point jumpers by Blais and Archambault. The defensive them continued for the five minutes and after Blais converted a layup at the 9:52 mark, the game was knotted at 10-10.After Bryant ran off four quick points to go up 14-10, freshman guard
Jordyn Peck (Shaker Heights, OH/ Shaker Heights) knocked home a three-pointer to make it a 14-13 game with 8:26 to go in the half.
Bryant's Breanna Rucker then shook loose for layup at 7:59 to trigger a game-changing 15-2 run. By the time Courtney Schissler's layup at the 3:11 mark went through to cap the run, the Bulldogs were in control, 29-15. Wagner would manage to shave three points off of the deficit by halftime as the team's entered intermission with Bryant on top by a 31-20 count.
After the teams traded baskets to begin the second half, Bryant went on another surge. With the Bulldogs leading 33-22, they then embarked on a 12-2 burst as the lead swelled to 45-24 with 14:38 lead. The Bryant advantage would crest at 28 as Tiersa Winder's layup at the 4:22 mark made it 67-39.
Bryant received balanced scoring as five different Bulldogs hit for double figures led by bruising forward Naan Ankoma-Mensa and guard Katie Whittington who each had 12. Ankoma-Mensa also ripped down 15 rebounds in posting the double-double. The Seahawks made Ankoma-Mensa work for her points, however, as she was harassed into a 4-for-20 shooting afternoon while also making 4-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Blais' 14-point game came on 6-of-11 shooting from the field, including a 2-of-6 effort from beyond the arc. Wagner was led in rebounding by senior
Veronick Fournier (Gatineau, Quebec) and junior
Laura Amorosa (Kirkland, Quebec/ Phillips Academy) who pulled down seven caroms apiece. Robinson was a force in the post on this afternoon her eight points came on 4-of-5 shooting while on the defensive end she swatted away a career-high five blocks.
Wagner outshot Bryant 40 percent to 38 percent while the Bulldogs gained a 44-32 edge in rebounding. The Seahawks were hurt by the 27 turnovers they committed which spoiled an otherwise efficient offensive performance as they were credited with 15 assists on 19 made baskets.
The Seahawks are next in action on Monday, February 18 when they host Central Connecticut in a special President's Day Top-off time of 1:00 pm.
