Wagner Falls At Iona 74-59 Despite Career-High 24 From Peck

Box Score FINAL STATS

New Rochelle, NY –
Sophomore guard Jordyn Peck (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) tossed in a career-high 24 points and her freshman backcourt mate Jasmine Nwajei (Rockaway Park, NY/Murry Bergtraum) added 10, but it was not enough as the Iona Gaels staved off Wagner 74-59.

With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 1-2 on the season while Iona improves to 4-2.

Iona received balanced scoring, led by 5-11 forward Joy Adams who powered her way for 24 points and 13 rebounds while guards Aaliyah Robinson and Aleesha Powell tallied 17 and 15 points, respectively.

In addition to surpassing her previous career high of 22, which she netted on two occasions last season, the 5-6, lefty-shooting Peck equaled her career high with five three-pointers made, finishing 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Nwajei's 10-point outing marks the third consecutive double-digit scoring game of her young career. The multi-faceted 5-8 point guard opened her collegiate career with a 19-point outing vs. No. 7 Kentucky (11/10), followed by a 20-point outburst in Wagner's 70-57 win at Monmouth (11/14). Nwajei dished out a career-high six assists, while grabbing five rebounds and coming up with a career-tying three steals.

Wagner couldn't find a third scoring option on this night, however, as the athletic Gaels limited Wagner to 35% shooting (21-60) while holding a 42-30 edge on the boards. Senior forward Stephanie Blais (Sherbrokooke, Quebec/Montmorency) and freshman guards Lyndsay Rowe (South River, NJ/St. John Vianney) and Maria Conyers-Jordan (Philadelphia, PA.Friends' Central) added seven points apiece.

These teams played on virtually even terms for the better part of the first half and when Rowe hit a layup with 6:43 left, the Seahawks trailed by just a 27-23 count. Wagner then went cold from the field, misfiring on its next six shots, as the Gaels embarked on an 11-0 run, capped by an Aaliyah Robinson layup, to make it a 38-23 game at the 3:26.

The only scoring the rest of the half came on a three-pointer from the right corner by sophomore forward Blais with 41 seconds to go in the half that broke a 6:01 scoreless spell and made it 38-26 game at the half.

The Gaels opened the second half with an 11-0 run, capped by a Robinson three-pointer,  to open a commanding 49-28  with 15:26 remaining. The feisty Seahawks responded with an 11-2 burst, with all 11 points coming from Peck, to slice the deficit to 51-39 with 11:25 left. Peck began the run with a three-pointer, followed by a layup. She was then fouled on a three-point attempt at 13:09 and when she made all three free throws, the Seahawks were within 51-36 with 13:09 left. Peck then nailed a trey at 11:25 to draw Wagner to within 51-39.

Aleesha Powell then stemmed the tide for Iona with a three at 10:07 to push the lead back to 15 at 54-39 and the Seahawks would get no closer than 13 the rest of the way.

With the win, Iona improves to 12-4 all-time in the series between the schools.

Wagner is next in action on Saturday, November 23 when the Seahawks travel to South Orange, NJ to meet the Seton Hall Pirates of the BIG EAS in a 2:00 pm tip.
