Seahawk Women Drop 72-66 Battle With Saint Francis Brooklyn

Freshman guard Jordyn Peck (Shaker Heights, OH/ Shaker Heights) tossed in a career-high 22 points on five-of-six shooting from three-point range to lead four players in double figures, but it was not enough as St. Francis Brooklyn staved off the Seahawks 72-66 in a spirited affair at the Spiro Sports Center.

Peck, an electric, lefty, who can beat defenders off the dribble as well as from deep, shot 8-of-15 overall from the field while adding three assists and a steal in a route-going performance. Senior forward Marie-Laurence Archambault (Montreal, Quebec/ Montmorency) added 15 points (3-of-8 from on three-pointers) in addition to three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Sophomore forward Stephanie Blais (Sherbrooke, Quebec/ Montmorency) and senior guard Veronick Fournier (Gatineau, Quebec/ Montmorency) tallied 14 and 13 points, respectively. Blais played a tremendous floor game, dishing out a career-high six assists and swiping a career-high five steals in addition to pulling down seven rebounds, one shy of a career high.

Fournier fill up the several stat sheet as well. The ever-hustling senior drilled six of the seven shots she attempted, while grabbing seven rebounds, and registering two assists and two steals.

St. Francis Brooklyn also demonstrated offensive firepower and balance, led by the 18-point performances turned in by forwards Sarah Benedetti and Jessica Kaufman, while Eilidh Simpson added 13 for the Terriers.

With the win, St. Francis Brooklyn moves to 5-9 overall, 2-1 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while Wagner, In dropping their 12th straight, the Seahawks are now 1-13 on the season, 0-3 in league play.

The Seahawks busted out of the gate quickly in this one. Knotted at 6-6, Peck ignited a 10-2 run by draining a three-pointer at the 16:00 mark. Following a St. Francis layup, Peck sank another three at 14:43 to make it 12-8. Consecutive jumpers by Fournier and Archambault swelled the Seahawk lead to 16-8 at the 13:16 mark.

Wagner then went on a 7-2 burst to open its biggest lead of the game a 23-10 on an old-fashioned three-point play by Blais with 10:18 to 10:18 to go in the half. After the Terriers received three straight points from Jaymee Veeney, Peck delivered yet another three-ball, her third of the half, pushing the lead back to 13 at 26-13 with 9:26 remaining in the half.
Seemingly on the ropes, St. Francis Brooklyn responded with a 17-4 surge over the next 5:21 to draw to within three at 30-27 with 4:05 left in the half. After Wagner pushed the lead back to five at 32-27 on a Fournier jumper, the Terriers rattled off a quick 6-0 run, capped by a Kaufman three-point play to regain the lead at 33-32. This was the first St. Francis Brooklyn lead since the score was 2-0. Wanger jumped back on top 34-33 on a Fournier bucket off a steal by junior forward Laura Amorosa (Kirkland, Quebec/ Phillips Academy). Both teams misfired on their last possessions of the half as Wagner took the one-point lead into halftime.

Wagner took its biggest lead of the second half of six at 41-35 on a Blais three-pointer at the 17:59 mark. The Terriers fought back to tie the game at 50-50 with 9:39 to go. At 7:48, Blais' driving layup gave the Seahawks their final lead of the game at 54-53. A three-pointer by Simpson at 4:03 was matched by an Archambault trey at 3:14 a 61-61 tie. A Benedetti layup at 1:39 put the Terriers on top 63-61 before a Fournier layup created the sixth and final tie of the game at 63-63 with 1:31 left.

St. Francis Brooklyn then put the game away with a 5-0 run on a Leah Fecko layup at 1:12 followed by a dagger of a three-pointer delivered by Simpson at the 39-second mark, which made It a 68-63 lead and the Terriers went on to post the 72-66 win from there.

St. Francis Brooklyn shot 50 percent (27-54) from the field while Wagner was 43 percent (23-53). Minus three post players, Wagner was out-rebounded on the glass 40-24.

The Seahawks are right back at it on Monday, January 14 when Wagner makes the short trek to meet LIU Brooklyn at 7:00 pm.

NOTES - Sophomore guard Shawn-Marie Heiliger (Charlotte, NC/ Charlotte Catholic) saw her first action of the season, seeing action in seven minutes and going 0-of-2 from the field. Even with Heiliger back in the lineup, Wagner still dressed just eight players as the Seahawks were minus sophomore point guard Jacqui Thompson (Southampton, PA/ St. Basil Academy), sophomore center Ugo Nwaigwe (Valley Stream, NY/ Valley Stream) and senior center Chanez Robinson (Newark, NJ/ Shabazz/ Northeastern) who are injured.

The Seahawks set season highs this afternoon in points (66), field goal percentage (.434), assists (17) and steals (14). Wagner tied for a season high in three-point field goals made (9) and finished with a season-low 11 turnovers. It also marked the second time this season that Wagner had a positive assist/turnover ratio (17-11). The other time was in the November 9 season opener vs. Army (16-10).

 Wagner's 13-point first-half lead tied for the second-largest lead that Wagner has held this season. In the waning minutes of the Seahawks' 61-47 win on November 14 win at Columbia, the Green & White led by 15 which remains a season high. The third double-digit lead that the Seahawks have held this season was a 12-point margin vs. FDU on January 5.
