Women’s Lacrosse Falls To Mount St. Mary’s 8-6 In Tight, Defensive Battle

The Wagner women's lacrosse team dug itself our out of an early 4-0 hole to make a game of it before coming up short, dropping an 8-6 decision to Mount St. Mary's on Senior Day at Wagner College Stadium.

The Seahawks drew to within two goals on two occasions late in the game. With 5:12 left to play, freshman midfielder Megan Sardella (Liverpool, NY/ Liverpool) slammed home a shot off after receiving a feed from junior attacker Erika Bulken (Baldwinsville, NY/ C.W. Baker) to make it 7-5.

Following a goal by the Mount's Lindsay Diaz at 2:10 that made it 8-5, senior midfielder Lauren Petrik (Baldwinsville, NY/ C.W. Baker) converted a free position shot with 1:30 left to make it an 8-6 game but that's as close as the Seahawks would get.

The Mountaineers' Jen Semler tallied three goals to lead all scorers while Kaitlyn Larrimore and Diaz added two goals each. For Wagner, Petrik led the way in this defensive-minded game with two goals. Contributing one goal apiece were sophomore attacker Sam Morin (Rockville Centre, NY/ South Side), junior attacker Jillian Maloney (Mahopac. NY/ Mahopac), Sardella and sophomore midfielder Michela Galante (Maplewood, NJ/ Columbia).

Mount St. Mary's held a 30-20 edge in shots and a 9-7 advantage in draw controls while Wagner held the upper hand in ground balls, 16-13. The Mountaineers were successful on 3-of-4 free position shots while Wagner was 3-of-7. In goal, sophomore Morgan Roach (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) saved 12 shots while going the distance between the pipes while the Mount's Brigid McTavish had 10 saves in her route-going performance.

Wagner, which falls to 6-9 overall, 1-6 in the Northeast Conference, closes the 2012 with a two-game Western Pennsylvania road swing. On Friday, April 20, the Seahawks travel to Moon Township, PA to meet Robert Morris s in a 1:00 pm start before taking on Saint Francis (PA) in the season finale on Sunday, April 22 at 1:00 pm.  

NOTES - Prior to the game, a Senior Day Ceremony was held in honor of the Seahawks' six graduating seniors: ; Petrik, defender Chanel Briggins (Freeport, NY/ Freeport), Carolyn Clark (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill), Melanie Garces (San Diego, CA/ Westview), Casey Lindine (Easton, CT/ Joel Barlow) and Denieda McCullough (Freeport, NY/ Freeport) . Entering the game, these six seniors had played in a combined 339 games, scored 278 goals, dished out 101 assists, collected 501 ground balls and oin 326 draw controls. The six wins posted by the 2012 Seahawks thus far are the most by the program since the 2005 season when Wagner went 9-9.
