FINAL STATS
Staten Island, NY – Senior attacker
Carolyn Clark (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) poured in a career-high seven goals but it was Monmouth, buoyed by Alex Marino's career-best eight-goal effort that came out on top as the Hawks outscored Wagner 20-13 in Northeast Conference (NEC) Women's lacrosse action.
The seven goals by Clark are one shy of the school-record eight goals scored by Heather George at Stony Brook on April 20, 2004.
With the loss, the Seahawks saw their season record fall to 6-8 while Wagner is now 1-5 in NEC play. Monmouth improves to 5-10 overall and kept their NEC Tournament hopes alive in moving its conference mark to 4-3.
Erica Abendschoen's goal with 11:35 left in the game staked Monmouth to its biggest lead of the game, a seemingly comfortable 18-9 edge. After the teams played the next 4:11 scoreless, Clark went to work, exploding for four unanswered goals in a span of 2:47 that drew the Seahawks within 18-13 with 4:39 left. The Hawks then countered with goals by Cassie Campasano and Kaleigh Gibbons in crafting the 20-13 victory.
Monmouth jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead before Clark registered her first marker of the game with 25:02 left in the half. When sophomore attacker
Sam Morin (Rockville Centre, NY/ South Side) blasted home a goal off a feed from senior midfielder
Lauren Petrik (Baldwinsville, NY/ C.W. Baker), the Seahawks trailed 7-4. But this is as close as Wagner would get the rest of the way as the Hawks ran off three straight goals en route to building an 11-5 cushion at halftime.
After Lillo opened the second half with her fifth goal of the game to make it 12-5, Wagner answered with a 4-1 run, capped by a Clark goal at 20:52 off an assist by junior attacker
Erika Bulken (Baldwinsville, NY/ C.W. Baker) that made it a 13-8 game. The Hawks the reeled off the next four goals and five of the next six, two by Lillo, to build the lead 18-9 lead.
Morin and senior midfielder
Melanie Garces (San Diego, CA/ Westview) finished with two goals apiece for the Seahawks while Bulken and sophomore midfielder
Michela Galante (Maplewood, NJ/ Maplewood) tallied one goal each. Petrik led Wagner in the assist department with two, while Garces and Morin chipped in with one apiece.
In support of Lillo's eight-goal outing, Gibbons, Campasano and Alex Marino notched two goals each for the Hawks. Marino was credited with a game-high four assists while Gibbons had three.
Monmouth out-shot Wagner 36-31 and led in draw controls while Wagner held a 15-14 edge in ground balls.
The Seahawks are next in action on Sunday, April 15 when the Seahawks host Mount St. Mary's on Senior Day. Wagner will honor its six seniors in a pre-game ceremony beginning at 12:45 pm.
