Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's lacrosse team rounds out the home portion of its 2012 season with a pair of home games this weekend, an encounter with Monmouth today at 3:00 pm, followed by the Senior Day matchup with Mount St. Mary's on Sunday, April 15 at 1:00 p.m.
In hosting the Hawks, Wagner will be playing its first home game since March 25 when the Seahawks bested Bryant 14-13. Since then, Wagner has dropped road contests at Central Connecticut St. on April 1 (14-7) and at LIU-Brooklyn on April 5 (14-13) in double-overtime.
The Seahawks bring a 6-7 overall record into today's play and a 1-4 mark in the Northeast Conference (NEC) which places Wagner in a tie for eighth place.The six victories posthus far this season are the most by a Seahawk team since 2005 when Wagner finished with a 9-9 record. Monmouth, meanwhile, enters the fray with a 4-10 record and a 3-3 mark in the NEC, which gives the Hawks a stranglehold on sixth place.
A huge storyline all season has been the uncanny productivity in the draw control de department livered by junior attacker
Erika Bulken (Baldwinsville, NY/ C. W. Baker). The talented and clever Bulken has won 79 draw controls in Wagner's 13 games, which computes to a 6.07 per game average which, heading into this week, ranked second in the NCAA. Her 79 draw controls are also a Wagner single-season school record.
Offensively, Wagner is led in scoring by senior attacker
Carolyn Clark (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) who has a team-high 38 goals which, combined with her seven assists, give her a team-high 45 points. Equally explosive sophomore attacker
Sam Morin (Rockville Centre, NY/ South Side) who has 41 points on 34 goals and seven assists.
Senior midfielder
Lauren Petrik (Baldwinsville, NY/ C.W. Baker) has turned in yet another stellar season as the ever-consistent middie has 39 points on 19 goals and a team-best 20 assists. In goal,
Shannon Sweeney (Madison,, NJ/ Madison) has shown poise and maturity throughout her freshman campaign. In 11 games, Sweeney has 89 saves, a .447 save percentage a goals against average of 11.78 and sports a 5-4 record. Sophomore
Morgan Roach (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) has 39 saves in six games played in more than 231 minutes of action. Another key to the Seahawkk defense has been the play of sophomore defender
Katy Bender (Cherry Hill, NJ/ Cherry Hill West), who leads the team with 17 caused turnovers.
