Wagner Women’s Lacrosse Hosts Sacred Heart On Sunday At 1:00 pm

Staten Island, NY – The Seahawks play the back end of their two-game homestand at Wagner College Stadium on the opening weekend of Northeast Conference (NEC) play when Wagner hosts Sacred Heart on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

The Seahawks bring an overall record of 5-4 into the game, having seen their bid to for a school-record tying sixth straight win come up short as Quinnipiac defeated the Seahawks 19-8 in the NEC opener for both teams.

Consecutive goals by senior midfielder iego, senior midfielder Melanie Garces (San Diego, CA/ Westview) within a 32-second span, tied the game at 3-3 with 18:05 remaining in the first half. The Bobcats then went on a pivotal 6-1 run in building a 9-4 advantage at halftime. Devon Gibney scored a pair of goals for Quinnipiac during this surge.

Wagner scored the first tally of the second half, a goal out of the stick of sophomore attacker San Morin off an assist by freshman midfielder Jessica Mills (Vernon Township, NJ/ Vernon) at the 25:12 mark of the second half to make it a 9-5 game. But that's as close as the Seahawks would get as Quinnipiac ran off four straight goals to build a 13-5 lead with 22:09 left en route to the 19-8 victory.

The Seahawks are led in scoring by sophomore attacker Sam Morin (Rockville Centre, NY/ South Side) who has 30 points this season 25 goals and five assists and entered the week fifth in the NEC in points per game at 2.75. Senior attacker Carolyn Clark (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) is second in points with 28 and leads the club in goals with 26. Heading into the Quinnipiac game, Clark was ranked fourth in the NEC with 2.88 points per game.

Senior midfielder Lauren Petrik (Baldwinsville, NY/ C.W. Baker) has been consistent all season and her statistics reflect that as he has 27 points on 15 goals and 12 assists. Garces s the team leader in ground balls with 20 while supplying 18 points on 15 goals and three assists. Junior attacker Erika Bulken (Baldwinsville, NY/ C.W. Baker) entered the week No. 1 in the nation in draw controls and currently averages 7.0 per game with 56 DC's in nine games.

Defensively, freshman Shannon Sweeney (Madison, NJ/ Madison) is 4-1 in goal with 54 saves, a 10.88 goals against average and a .486 save percentage. Sweeney is ably backed up by sophomore Morgan Roach (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) who has stopped 39 shots on the season. Sophomore defender Kathy Bender (Cherry Hill, NJ/ Cherry Hill) has been active all season as her 15 caused turnovers are far and away tops on the team.

Sacred Heart (2-5, 1-0), meanwhile, opened its NEC campaign with a dominating 22-8 victory at LIU-Brooklyn on Friday. Aurelie Pluijmakers led the offensive explosion with eight goals to lead Sacred Heart. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Pioneers as they improved to 2-5 on the year.  LIU remains winless at 0-8.

The Pioneers scored a season-high 22 goals on 36 shots in the league opener, out-shooting the Blackbirds 36-25. Pluijmakers scored eight times on nine shots and added a pair of assists for a 10 point afternoon. The senior attacker raised her team-leading goal total to 22 on the year.

Seniors Kate Kmiotek (Farmingville, NY) and Alyssa Dorsey (Massapequa, NY) and junior Emily Pepe (East Quogue, NY) all scored three goals apiece in the win.  Kmiotek added four assists to her totals while Pepe dished out three helpers.
