Wagner Women Drop Season Finale At Bryant 65-53

FINAL STATS

Smithfield, RI  –
Senior forward Brittney Thorpe (Newport News, VA/ Heritage) tossed in a career-high 15 points while sophomore forward Laura Amorosa (Kirkland, Quebec/ Phillips Academy) also notched a career high with 11 but it wasn't enough as Bryant, which led by just three at halftime, pulled away for a 65-53 win in the season finale for both teams.

Danielle Douglas led Bryant with 17 points while the Bulldogs received double-doubles from Naan Amkoma-Mensa and Brittany Stahura. Ankoma-Mensa had 14 points and 12 rebounds while Stahura totaled 10 points and 13 boards as Bryant enjoyed a commanding 53-31 edge in the rebounding department.

Playing without the services of junior guard Veronick Fournier (Gatineau, Quebec/ Montmorency) and redshirt junior forward Chanez Robinson (Newark, NJ/ Shabazz), the Seahawks hung tough for a long while in this one. Fournier, who was coming off a fine 16-point outing vs. Central Connecticut St. on Saturday, was sidelined with a stomach virus while Robinson sat out her second consecutive game with an injury suffered vs. Fairleigh Dickiinson (2/20).

The first half was a back and forth affair that featured nine ties and eight lead changes. Wagner took its final lead of the half at 32-30 on a Thorpe layup off a feed from freshman point guard Jacqui Thompson (Southampton, PA/ St. Basil Academy) with 1:39 left in the half. Two Stahura free throws and a three-pointer by Steph Cardamone wth 32 seconds left lifted Bryant to a 35-32 halftime lead.

After Amorosa knotted the game at 35-35 with a three-ball 59 seconds into the second half, the Bulldogs got their transition game going, embarking on a 13-1 run over the next 4:46, capped by a Ankoma-Mensa layup with 14:15 left to open a 48-36 lead. The Seahawks snapped back with a 6-0 run on a Thompson three-pointer, followed by a layup and free throw by Thorpe which made it 48-42 with 11:55 left.

The Bulldogs countered with a 7-0 run to push the lead back to 13 at 55-42 with 9:14 to go and Bryant managed to hold on to its double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Both teams went after it defensively as they each shot 35 percent from the field.

In addition to her team-high 15 points, Thorpe, who shot 6-of-14 from the field, pulled down six rebounds, dished out four assists and came up with one steal in a productive 33-minute stint. Amorosa's 11-point night came on 4-of-6 shooting, including a 2-of-3 effort from beyond the arc.

Senior center Kelly Clark (Neptune, NJ/ St. Rose) recorded an eight-point, eight-rebound effort in her final game wearing the Green & White while Thompson played a solid floor game with six points and four assists. Also finishing with six points was freshman forward Stephanie Blais (Sherbrooke, Quebec/ Montmorency) who knocked down a pair of treys.

In dropping their 22nd straight game, Wagner finished the season with a 2-27 record, 1-17 in the Northeast Conference while Bryant ended its season with a 14-15 mark, 7-11 in league play.

NOTES – Clark finished her stellar Seahawk career with 1,117 points which places her 19th on the Wagner all-time scoring list. The 6-3 Clark finished her career second all-time on the Wagner career blocked shots list with 184. Clark had 51 blocks on the year, marking the third time in her career she had 51 for a season as she hit that number in 2008-09 and in 2010-11. The three 51-block seasons turned in by Clark tie for fourth on the Seahawk all-time single-season list. Clark led Wagner in scoring and rebounding all season and finished her senior season averaging 13.6 points and 7.8 rebounds. Thompson's four assists allowed her to hit the century mark in assists as she finished her freshman campaign with exactly 100 assists. Junior forward Marie-Laurence Archambault (Montreal, Quebec/ Montmorency) was Wagner's second-leading scorer on the season, averaging 7.9 points per game. She will enter her senior season next fall ranked fourth on the Seahawk all-time list in three-pointers made (168) and fifth in attempts (474).
