Honolulu, HI - Hawaii defeated Wagner 6-2 in the first game of today's doubleheader at Les Murakami Stadium as the Rainbows improve to 4-3 while the Seahawks fall to 0-3.
Freshman RHP David Longville was the story of the game, firing 4.0 perfect inning with three strikeouts while picking up the victory for Hawaii.
The Green & White looked good in the early going, recording seven hits over the first three frames in jumping out to a 2-0 lead.
Wagner opened the game's scoring with a run in the top of the first on the strength of four singles. With one out, freshman
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) singled up the middle before senior
Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) and classmate
Hayden Hunter (Santa Monica, CA / Notre Dame) loaded up the bases with singles of their own. Junior
Jayson Keel (Starkville, MS / Starkville / Holmes Community College) followed with the fourth single of the frame to plate Dini while staking the Seahawks to a 1-0 lead. With the bases still loaded, Rainbow starting pitcher senior RHP Jesse Moore induced an inning-ending double play while escaping further damage.
After freshman RHP
Dan Watson (Howell, NJ / Howell) retired the side without incident in the bottom part of the frame the Seahawks again struck in the top of the second.
With one out, junior
Nick Alfano (Coral Springs, FL / North Broward Prep) smashed a double to left center before moving to third on
Jason Gordon's (Baltimore, MD / Archbishop Curley) first collegiate hit. Senior
Eddie Brown (Sr., Edison, NJ / St. Joseph's (Metuchen) / Seton Hall) then extended the lead out to 2-0 with a RBI fielder's choice that plated Alfano.
In the bottom part of the frame, Watson quickly got the defense off the field with a 1-2-3 inning and the Green & White again threatened in the top of the third. Keel roped a single to center field for his second hit of the game, before moving into scoring position with a steal of second. Unfortunately, the Mississippi native would be stranded as Moore coaxed an inning-ending ground out.
From that point it was all Hawaii.
Watson walked the bases loaded with one out in the bottom part of the third before Zack Swasey cut the deficit to 2-1 with an infield single to short. The Rainbows then tied the game when Pi'ikea Kitamura drew a bases loaded walk while tying the game up at 2-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, Max Duval put Hawaii in front for good with his first home of the season, a solo shot to left field.
The Rainbows would tack on three more runs over their last two trips to the plate while Longville retired all 12 batters he faced in collecting the win in relief.
In victory, Hawaii took advantage of six Wagner walks as the Seahawk pitchers allowed just seven hits, including that never left the infield.
Sophomore RHP
Ryan Casey (Paramus, NJ / St. Joseph Regional) was saddled with the loss, yielding four runs on six hits and a pair of walks over 3.1 innings.
Keel led the way for Wagner, going 2-for-3 with a RBI and a stolen base.
Swasey was 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI at the plate, leading the way for the Rainbows..
