Providence, RI – The Wagner College men's lacrosse team, fresh off a highly-competitive home contest vs. BIG EAST member Rutgers on February 21, a game the Scarlet Knights survived by a 9-5 count, take to the road this afternoon to meet the Providence College Friars in a 2:00 pm matchup.
Both Wagner and Providence will be seeking their first victories of the season, each bring 0-1 records into today's play. The Friars were topped in their season opener, 10-5, at Lafayette on February 18.
In the first game under newly-hired head coach
Matt Poskay, the Wagner-Rutgers game was a tight, intense affair throughout, a departure from Wagner's recent history with Rutgers. For Wagner, the talented midfield combination of junior
Nick DePhillips (Glen Ridge, NJ/ Glen Ridge) and Colin O'Rourke (Worcester, MA. St. John's Shrewsbury), tallied two goals apiece while senior midfielder
William Hedges (Shoreham, NY/ Shoreham) added one goal.
Defenseman
Dustin Doty (Sherman Oaks, CA/ Crespi Carmelite) was active throughout the contest, collecting team-highs in ground balls (5) and caused turnovers (3). Sophomore goalie
Nicholas Gibaldi (Rocky Point, NY/ Rocky Point) was stout in goal, recording 13 saves including several sterling stops from point-blank range.
