Lafayette Outscores Wagner 18-7 In Women’s Lacrosse Action

Sophomore attacker Sam Morin (Rockville Centre, NY/ South side) and senior midfielder Melanie Garces (San Diego, CA/ Westview) tallied two goals apiece while junior attacker Erika Bulken (Baldwinsville, NY/ C.W. Baker) came up with an astounding 10 draw controls but it was not enough to off-set the four-goal games delivered by Lafayette's Ana White and Addie Godfrey which keyed the Leopards' 18-7 victory.

With the victory, Lafayette improves to 2-0 on the season while the Seahawks fall to 0-2.

The Leopards jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Bulken put the Seahawks on the boards with an unassisted goal at the 20:49 mark of the first half. Lafayette then ran off eight straight goals in widening the margin to 10-1 with 5:44 left in the half. Godfrey and Jessica Rothstein notched two goals apiece during this stretch while White, Laura Kleiber, Margaux Lebuffe and Cammie Linville each added a goal during the run.

Wagner then answered with goals by Garces and Morin, the latter on a free-position shot with 2:45 to go in the half to make it a 10-3 game. White then shook loose for back-to-back goals which were followed by Garces' second goal with 36 seconds left in the half to make it a 12-4 game at halftime.

Lafayette went on to outscore the Seahawks 6-3 in the second half en route to the 18-7 win. There were several positives for Wagner as the Seahawks led in ground balls, 20-17, and in draw controls, 15-12, while the Leopards held a 34-24 edge in shots and were 4-of-7 on free-position shots while Wagner was 2-of-7.

In addition to her 10 draw controls, Bulken wound up with two points on one goal and an assist while senior midfielder Deneida McCullough (Freeport, NY/ Freeport) added a goal for Wagner. Defensively, sophomore Katy Bender (Cherry Hill, NJ/ Cherry Hill West) made her presence felt with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Sophomore Morgan Roach (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) and freshman Shannon Sweeney (Madison, NJ/ Madison) combined to save 10 shots in goal for the Seahawks. Sweeney came on late in the first half and acquitted herself well in her first collegiate game, stopping seven shots over the game's final 35:44.

Wagner is next in action on Saturday, February 25 when the Seahawks travel to Philadelphia to meet the Hawks of Saint Joseph's in a 1:00 pm tilt.
