Monmouth Pulls Away For 70-54 Win Over Wagner Women

FINAL STATS

Staten Island, NY –
Monmouth pulled away in the second half of a game that was tied at intermission, using a formula that included balanced scoring combined with stingy defense in posting a 70-54 Northeast Conference (NEC) victory over Wagner at the Spiro Sports Center.

In a first half that featured six lead changes and two ties, the Seahawks forged a 24-24 tie at halftime behind nine points from junior forward Marie-Laurence Archambault (Montreal, Quebec/ Montmorency). The largest lead either team enjoyed in the closely-contested first half was the five-point edge Wagner mustered at 9-4 with 11:50 left in the half on a pair of free throws by senior forward Brittney Thorpe (Newport News, VA/ Heritage).

The opening minutes of the second half featured more of the same. When senior forward Chanez Robinson (Newark, NJ/ Shabazz) hit a layup after receiving a feed from fellow post player Thorpe, Wagner led 35-34 with 16:34 to go in the game. This would prove to be, however, the Seahawks' last lead of the contest as the Hawks went on a game-changing 19-3 run over the next 6:56 run in building a 53-38 lead with 9:53 left.

Six different Hawks scored during the run, led by four points apiece by Abby Martin, Channel Gomez and Alysha Womack. The closest the Seahawks would get the rest of the way came at the 8:32 mark when senior center Kelly Clark (Neptune, NJ/ St. Rose) hit a driving layup to draw Wagner within 53-41. Monmouth answered with an 8-2 burst capped by a Womack jumper to run its lead out to 18 with 6:13 left en route to recording the 16-point win.

Womack led all scorers with 16 points for the Hawks as Monmouth placed four players in double figures. Martin and Chevannah Paalvast added 13 points while Gomez chipped in with 10. For the game, Monmouth shot 46 percent from the field and was credited with 17 assists on 25 made field goals.

Clark paced Wagner in scoring with 14 points and in rebounding with nine. Archambault had 12 points on the afternoon while junior guard Veronick Fournier (Gatineau, Quebec) and Thorpe added nine and eight points, respectively. For the game, the Seahawks shot 31 percent while committing 20 turnovers. Wagner was credited with 14 assists on its 18 made field goals. The Seahawks won the rebounding battle, 46-41.

With the win, Monmouth improves to 15-11 overall, 10-5 in the NEC. In dropping their 19th straight game, the Seahawks fall to 2-24 on the season, 1-14 in the league play.

Prior to Monday night's 7:00 pm game vs. Fairleigh Dickinson , the Seahawks will celebrate Senior Night in a pre-game ceremony, paying tribute to three student-athletes in Clark, Thorpe and Kanifa Hicks (Paterson, NJ/ Passaic Tech).

THINK PINK - The Wagner-Monmouth women's game was the Seahawks' Play4Kay Game, an initiative aimed at raising funds and awareness about breast cancer. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund has rebranded its WBCA Pink Zone initiative as “Play 4Kay” this season. From February 10-20, basketball teams from across the nation are wearing pink uniforms or as part of their uniforms while encouraging fans to wear pink as well. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund remains the official charity of the initiative. Pink Zone was created in 2007 after Yow's third recurrence of breast cancer was diagnosed in 2006. Before the legendary NC State coach died on Jan. 24, 2009, Yow − along with the WBCA and The V Foundation − united thousands in the fight against women's cancers. Since then, the movement continues to grow and change lives, especially during February.
