FINAL STATS
Staten Island, NY - Senior center
Kelly Clark (Neptune, NJ/ St. Rose) recorded her seventh double-double of the season and 11th of her career with 16 points and 10 rebounds and added five blocked shots but Mount St. Mary's received double-digit scoring from four players, headed by Ashley Christie's 15 points, and the Mountaineers withstood an early second half Wagner rally in posting a 71-48 Northeast (NEC) victory.
This is “Rivalry Week” in the NEC as each league team plays another league foe two consecutive times. Wagner is partnered with Mount St. Mary's, thus the Seahawks will travel to Emmitsburg, MD on Wednesday, February 15 to face these same Mountaineers at 7:00 pm.
With her 16 points today, Clark has now cracked the Wagner All-Time Top 20 in scoring as her 1,058 career points put her in 19
th place. Next on the list is Jeanne Sullivan (1978-82) with 1,144 points. Clark's five blocks were one shy of her career high six.
After Clark scored the first three points of the game, the Mountaineers went on an 18-1 run in jumping out to an 18-4 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the half. During this run, the Seahawks missed 10 consecutive shots from the floor. Senior forward
Chanez Robinson (Newark, N J/ Shabazz) broke the string with a layup at the 11:21 mark that made it 18-6. The Mountaineers went on to take a comfortable 36-20 lead into the locker room at halftime. Wagner shot just 21 percent (5-of-24) from the field in the opening half while committing 13 turnovers.
The Seahawks opened the second half on a 16-8 run, spearheaded by Clark who tallied nine points during the surge. Clark opened the run with a layup 22 seconds into the half to make it 36-22 while redshirt junior guard
Kanifa Hicks (Paterson, NJ/ Passaic Tech) capped the run with a layup at the 14:33 mark that drew Wagner to within eight at 44-36.
The Mount responded, however, with seven straight points which kick-started a 15-2 run that saw the Mountaineers open a 59-38 lead on a Christie layup with 8:35 to go en route to the 71-48 win.
The Seahawks played a crisper second half than they did in the opening 20 minutes as Wagner turned the ball over just five times while being credited with 11 assists. In fact, every basket the Seahawks made in the second half came as a result of a Wagner assist. The Seahawks' shooting percentage, while better than in the first half, was just 37 percent (11-of-30).
Joining Christie in double figures for The Mount were Sydney Henderson (14), Jessie Kaufman (12) and Tara Lonergan (11). Nine different players found the scoring column. In addition to Clark's 16, junior forward
Marie-Laurence Archambault (Montreal, Quebec/ Montmorency) had six points while junior guard
Veronick Fournier (Gatineau, Quebec) and freshman forward
Stephanie Blais (Sherbrooke, Quebec/ Montmorency) added five points apiece.
For the game, Mount St. Mary's out-shot Wagner 44 percent to 30 percent while holding a slim 43-41 rebounding edge.
With the loss, Wagner has now dropped 17 straight games as the Seahawks are now 2-22, 2-12 in the NEC while The Mount moves to 10-14 on the season, 6-7 in league play.
