Box Score
Staten Island, NY – Sophomore Jackie Nicholas (Rockville Centre, NY / South Side) netted the games only two goals to lift the Seahawks' women's soccer team past Delaware State, 2-0, today at Wagner College Stadium.
With the win, Wagner improves to 6-2-2 overall and remains unbeaten at home with a 5-0-1 record. The loss drops the Hornets to 1-10-1.
After fending off an early Hornets rush, the Seahawks began controlling the pace and possession of play. Nicholas recorded Wagner's first shot on goal, getting on the end of a Katie Keown (Morris Plains, NJ / Morristown) throw-in, forcing Katelyn Koslosky to make the save.
Wagner nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 38th minute when the Green & White were awarded their first corner kick of the game. Senior captain Terryn Marette (Chevy Chase, MD / Chevy Chase) swung in a right-footed bid that found the head of Jenna Fioranelli (Collierville, TN / Collierville). The junior's header was directed on net, but was blocked on the goal line by a Hornet defender, keeping the game tied at 0-0 heading into the half.
The Seahawks' offense wasted no time in the second half as Nicholas and fellow forward Julie Vigliotti (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) teamed up for a give-and-go just inside the 18-yard box. The sneaky pass by Vigliotti allowed Nicholas to poke a shot past Koslosky for her team-leading third goal of the season.
In the 59th minute, Nicholas struck again. This time, the second-year striker was left alone in front of the goal, where she took a centering pass from Marette and buried her shot into the top left corner of the goal, extending the Seahawk lead to 2-0.
Delaware State looked to get one back in the 76th minute, after some miscommunication between Wagner goalie Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY / John F. Kennedy) and her defense gave forward Lauren Price a free shot at goal. Defender Amanda Sieferman (Tucson, AZ / Canyon Del Oro), however, came up big by making a sliding save to keep the ball out of the net.
Wagner's defense was on lockdown for the remainder of the game, as Marcy was forced to make just two saves in the final half to seal her fifth shutout of the season.
The Green & White have Northeast Conference games the rest of the way, as they travel to Monmouth and Mount St. Mary's next weekend. Their first game against the Hawks is slated for Friday, September 30 at 6:00 p.m. while Wagner's game at The Mount will take place on Sunday, October 2 at Noon.
