STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner women's soccer team earned head coach
Fred King's first victory with a 2-1 win over Monmouth on Sunday afternoon on Hameline Field. The victory also marked the Seahawks' first win over the Hawks in program history.
Monmouth controlled the early chances, recording 10 shots through the opening 36 minutes, but the Seahawks' defense kept the match scoreless.
Wagner broke through in the 37th minute when junior forward
Alana Arjona found the back of the net off an assist from sophomore forward
Riley Frederick.
Monmouth answered just 36 seconds later to send the match into halftime tied at 1-1.
The Seahawks regained the lead in the 51st minute when junior forward
Megan Knapp converted off an assist from sophomore midfielder
Vanessa Lovisa.
Wagner preserved the advantage the rest of the way, holding Monmouth scoreless over the final 39 minutes.
In the win, junior goalkeeper
Abigail Marcello recorded a career-high 12 saves, including five in the first half and seven in the second.
The Seahawks return to action on Sunday, Aug. 23, when Wagner travels to Manhattan for its first road game of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Gaelic Park.
