BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — Junior goalkeeper
Abigail Marcello was named NEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week and an NEC Prime Performer, the conference announced Monday.
Marcello totaled 15 saves across Wagner's opening two contests, highlighted by a career-high 12 saves in Sunday's 2-1 victory over Monmouth. Marcello faced 28 shots from the Hawks, making five saves in the first half and seven in the second to help the Seahawks earn their first win over Monmouth in program history. Her 12 saves were also the most by a Seahawks goalkeeper in a single game since Sam Hughes also recorded 12 saves on Sept. 9, 2021.
The Havre de Grace, Maryland native also recorded three saves while facing nine shots in Thursday's season opener against Rider.
Marcello is coming off a sophomore campaign in which she posted an 8-2-2 record with 41 saves and five shutouts while earning NEC All-Rookie Team honors.
Junior forward
Megan Knapp was also named an NEC Prime Performer after scoring the game-winning goal in Wagner's 2-1 victory over Monmouth on Sunday. Knapp recorded two shots across the opening week, including one against Rider in the season opener.
Marcello, Knapp, and the rest of the Seahawks return to action on Sunday, Aug. 23, when Wagner travels to Manhattan for its first road game of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Gaelic Park.
