Smithfield, RI – The Wagner women's soccer team dropped its Northeast Conference opener to Bryant today 2-0 at Sutton Field in Smithfield, RI.
Just two minutes into the game, Seahawk goalkeeper Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY / John F. Kennedy) was called upon to make her first save, denying Shana Follette of the game's first goal. Minutes later, junior Julie Vigliotti (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) had her first bid of day, sailing a shot just wide of Lauren Viverito and the Bulldogs net.
In the 20th minute, Wagner midfielder Alyssa Grecco (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) had the game's first quality scoring chance, striking the post on her first shot of the day, keeping the game scoreless.
Heading into the halftime break, Bryant held an 8-6 advantage in shots, with both Marcy and Viverito each making two saves in the first 45 minutes.
The home Bulldogs came out of the locker room poised to strike first, as their offensive pressure immediately transitioned into an early chance. Just two minutes into the second half, Kaitlyn Hinck got her head on an Ari Goldberg corner kick, putting her shot off the post, but out of the net.
Wagner's offense followed up the scoring threat with back-to-back corner kicks of their own, both being taken by senior captain Terryn Marette (Chevy Chase, MD / Chevy Chase). Both Grecco and sophomore Jackie Nicholas (Rockville Centre, NY / South Side) got on the other side of Marette's offerings, but neither was able to put their chance on the frame.
Bryant broke the scoreless tie in the 68th minute of play after Suzanne Sanders tipped in a service by Regan Marin to score her third goal of the year, and give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead.
Sanders again played a contributing factor in Bryant's second goal, assisting Julie Vajda on her first tally of the season, putting the home team up, 2-0, late in the second half.
Midfielder Monica Zurich (Montvale, NJ / Pascack Hills) tested Viverito in the 80th minute, but was unable to get Wagner on the board, as the sophomore goalie made her fourth and final save of the game to seal the 2-0 win for the Bulldogs.
Marcy recorded four saves for the Seahawks, who fall to 5-2-2 on the year. The win lifts Bryant over the .500 mark, moving to 4-3-2, and 1-0-0 in the conference.
The Green & White will take to the pitch next on Sunday, September 25, when they host Delaware State University in their final non-conference match of the year. Game time for that contest is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
