Wagner Men's Lacrosse Falls to First-Place Quinnipiac 16-10 On Senior Day

Sophomore attack Cody Isdaner (Gladwyne, PA/ Episcopal Academy) poured in four goals and added two assists but it was not enough as Quinnipiac posted a 16-10 victory over Wagner, giving the Bobcats a share of the Northeast Conference regular season title.

Quinnipiac's 4-1 NEC record matches the 4-1 mark recorded by Mount St. Mary's. However, the Bobcats will be the number two seed in next week's NEC Tourney as the Mount owns the tiebreaker. The other two schools that qualified were Robert Morris and Sacred Heart.

Basil Kostaras paced the Bobcats with five goals on the offensive end. Defensively, goalie Kevin Benzing had eight saves while allowing just five goals in 52 minutes of action.

The Bobcats jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with six different players finding the net. Sophomore midfielder John Hojnoski (West Springfield, MA/ Cathedral) put the Seahawks on the board with 8:09 remaining in the second quarter off a feed from Isdaner. Junior attack Mike Hurley (Billerica, MA/ Billerica) then made it two goals in arrow for the Seahawks when he found paydirt less than a minute later, rifling home an unassisted tally that made it a 6-2 game.

After Quinninpiac reeled off consecutive goals, Wagner responded with an Isdaner goal off an assist by senior midfielder Will Macumber (Manorville, NY/ Eastport South Manor) with 5:34 to go in the half to make it 8-3. The Bobcats answered with another 2-0 run that was countered by an Isdaner goal with 2:24 left in the first half off an assist by sophomore middie Colin O'Rourke (Worcester, MA/ St. John's Shrewsbury) that drew the Seahawks to within 10-4 at intermission

In the second half, the Bobcats came out with guns blazing as they went on a 6-1 blitzkrieg in building a commanding 16-5 lead. The lone Seahawk goal in this stretch came out of the stick of freshman attack Sam Morrissey (Long Valley, NJ/ West Morris Central) off a Hurley assist. The never-say-die Seahawks then ended the game, and the 2011 season, on a 5-0 run to fashion the final score at 16-10.

Sophomore midfielder Brian Faughnan (New Canaan, CT/ New Canaan) started the game-ending run with a tally at the 7:45 mark of the fourth quarter after receiving a pass from Morrissey. After Hurley sank an unassisted goal with 5:59 left, Isdaner posted consecutive goals,, the first on a fast break off a pass from junior midfielder James Cazzupe (Radnor, PA/ Archbishop Carroll) at 4:24, followed by an unassisted goal with 3:34 left in the game. With 10 seconds, remaining, Morrissey rounded out the day's scoring off an Isdaner assist to put the Seahawks in double digits.

In addition to Isdaner's four-goal afternoon, Morrissey and Hurley finished with two goals each while Faughnan and Hojnoski finished with one goal piece. Isdaner's two assists led the team while Hurley, Macumber, Morrissey and O'Rourke all finished with one assist.

In goal, freshman# Nicholas Gibaldi# (Rocky Point, NY/ Rocky Point) came up with 16 saves, marking the 10th time this season he has registered 10 or more saves in a game.

Supporting Kostaras' five-goal outing with two goals apiece for Quinnipiac were Kevin Kelly and Christian Haggerty. Jack Oppenheimer was Quinnipiac's top playmaker as he was credited with four assists.

Statistically, Quinnipiac out-shot Wagner 48-22, held a 38-25 edge inn ground balls while winning 18-of-30 faceoffs. The Seahawks were successful on just 13-of-23 clears while the Bobcats successfully cleared the ball 16-of-17 times. All told, the Seahawks turned the ball over 27 times while Quinnipiac was charged with 20 turnovers. The 10 goals scored by Wagner matched the Seahawks' season high which first occurred on February 26 in a 14-10 loss to Providence.

With the loss, the Seahawks finish the season with an overall record of 0-12, 0-6 in NEC play while the Bobcats evened their record at 6-6 while improving to 4-1 in the league.

SENIOR DAY NOTES – Prior to the game, a ceremony was held in honor of Wagner's two seniors, Macumber and defenseman Colin Shaw (Malvern, PA/ Archbishop Carroll). Macumber closed his career having played in 54 games in which he scored 47 goals while adding 15 assists, giving him a total of 62 career points. On March 11, 2010, he recorded a career high three goals vs. Dartmouth. As a freshman in 2008, his 19 points were second on the team. In his sophomore year, his 20 points tied for second on the team while last year's point total of 21 was good for third on the team. This season, he battled through injuries to appear in eight games. Macumber is a Business Administration major with a concentration in Finance. Shaw played in 58 games during his Seahawk career, collecting 76 career ground balls along the wayy to go with 46 caused turnovers. After getting acclimated to Division I lacrosse in his freshman season, Shaw collected 18 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers as a sophomore, 27 ground balls and a team-high 19 caused turnovers in his junior season and 20 ground balls and a team-leading 13 ground balls this season. He entered today's game ranked 47th in the nation in caused turnovers per game. Shaw will graduate with a degree in economics.
