Wagner Falls To First-Place Mount St. Mary’s

Brett Schmidt and Mike Adkins scored four goals apiece to lead the Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team to a 22-5 Northeast Conference victory over Wagner at Waldron Family Field.

The Mountaineers led 5-1 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 11-2 at halftime. Sophomore midfielder John Hojnoski (West Springfield, MA/ Cathedral) tallied an unassisted goal at the 8:01 mark of first quarter to tie the game at 1-1. After the Mount ran off the next four goals to go up by a 5-1 count, sophomore midfielder Colin O'Rourke (Worcester, MA/ St. John's Shrewsbury) scored the first of his two goals, an unassisted tally with 11:41 remaining in the second quarter.

The Mount would close the half with six consecutive goals in securing the 11-2 halftime advantage. The Mountaineers picked up where they left off at the outset of the second half, embarking on a 5-0 run in building a 16-2 lead. O'Rourke would briefly stem the tide with his second goal of the afternoon, this one coming with 2:47 left in the third quarter. Wagner posted two goals in the fourth quarter, one by junior attack Mike Hurley (Billerica, MA/ Billerica) off an O'Rourke assist and the other coming out of the stick of freshman attack Sam Morrissey (Long Valley, NJ/ West Morris Catholic).

Freshman goalie Nicholas Gibaldi (Rocky Point, NY/ Rocky Point) recorded nine saves while playing the first 49 minutes of the game before giving way to junior Peter Rubin (East Rockaway, NY/ East Rockaway) who came up with two saves in the game's final 11 minutes. Three different Mountaineer goalies combined for 10 saves. Starte K.C. Dibartolo, who played the first half, was credited with the victory.

With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 0-11 on the season, 0-4 in the NEC while the Mount improves to 7-5 overall, and a perfect 4-0 in league play.

The Seahawks conclude the 2011 campaign on Saturday, April 30 when Wagner hosts Quinnipiac at 1:00 p.m. The Wagner-Quinnipiac tussle will also be Senior Day. In a pre-game ceremony, the Seahawk program will honor its two seniors, attackman Will Macumber (Manorville, NY/ Eastport South Manor) and defenseman Colin Shaw (Malvern, PA/ Archbishop Carroll).
