Staten Island, NY – The 2011 Green & White Scrimmage, which capped the end of the Wagner College football team's spring practice sessions this afternoon, offered a little bit of everything for Head Coach
Walt Hameline and his troops.
A blend of fresh new faces combined with seasoned veterans and it resulted in a 21-20 win for the Green (Offense) over the White (Defense) at Wagner College Stadium. Using a scoring system that allowed for conventional scoring on offense, while rewarding the defense with points for forced turnovers and three-and-outs, the game was a nip-and-tuck affair with the offense pulling out the win on the last possession of the game.
“The biggest thing that we were looking for as a staff was for our kids to give a great effort all spring and we really believe we got that,” said Wagner head coach
Walt Hameline who will enter his 31st season at the helm of the Seahawk program this fall with a career mark of 200-115-2 (.634). “Just like anything, we had a lot of growing pains for our young kids on the offensive line getting adapted. I think we've made progress there but we still have a lot of work to do.
“Defensively, our concerns were in the secondary with youth there,” Hameline continued. “I think we've got good athletes back there and now they just need to progress. On a whole, I feel good about some of the kids that entered the program in January, there are some athletes there, and I feel good about the guys who we have coming back with us.”
“As for today, I think we did some good things on offense but that on a whole the defense up front dominated with our veteran kids and took advantage of some things in their blitz game and so forth. But I think it will be a good learning tool for us and something to build on. From this step, you go to the next step which is summer workouts and getting ready for the season.”
With starting quarterback
Nick Doscher sidelined all spring due to an ankle injury, Wagner utilized three different quarterbacks in the game and all three displayed excellent accuracy. Matt Misely gained the starting assignment and started things off in a big way by connecting with wide receiver
Justin Matthews on a 74-yard touchdown strike on the very first snap of the game. Misley would go on to complete 8-of-11 passes for 113 yards.
Justin Sciarra also looked sharp at the controls, connecting on 7-of-8 passes for 75 yards.
Marshyl Rothman also looked crisp under center, completing 6-of-7 aerials for 125 yards.
It was Rothman who led the Green to the come-from-behind win. Trailing 20-13, Rothman engineered a long drive that was sparked by a 55-yard missile to
Mike Weber. The drive resulted in a 22-yard touchdown strike from Rothman to wide receiver
David Crawford. With the White now clinging to a 20-19 lead, Rothman then found Crawford all alone in the right corner of the end zone on the ensuing two-point attempt which gave the Green the 21-20 win.
In the receiving department, Matthews finished with two receptions for 82 yards while Crawford snared four passes for 54 yards. With starting running back
Dominique Williams limited all spring due to a knee injury that caused him to sit out today's game, seven different Seahawks ran the ball over the course of the scrimmage. Misley led all rushers with 33 yards on four carries, highlighted by a 28-yard scamper early in the contest. Fellow signal-callers Sciarra and Rothman also displayed some fancy footwork as Sciarra rushed five times for 31 yards while Rothman finished with 25 yards on four rushing attempts. Five different running backs carried the ball with
Ricky Morgan leading the way with 21 yards on three carries, including a long run of 18 yards.
Placekicker
David Lopez was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts with a long of 42 yards while
Rory Cregan handled the punting duties.
Led by its veteran defensive line, the White team was stout up front all afternoon, led by the play of
Quintin Anderson,
Lawrence Williams and
Julian Stanford. Others who stood out defensively included defensive back
Torian Phillips, along with linebackers
Jamiel Sims, Sidiq Sonlemana and
Mike Lombardo.
Defensive back
Jeremiah Brown and linebacker
Nick Suppes came up with interceptions for the White while linebacker
Tom Klepper had a blocked punt.
The Seahawks will kick off the 2011 season with a home game vs. Northeast Conference rival Saint Francis (PA) on Saturday, September 3 at 1:00 p.m.
