Wagner Men’s Lacrosse Falls 13-6 At Siena

Colin O'Rourke
BOX SCORE

Loudonville, NY –
Playing a noticeably more competitive brand of lacrosse on a game-by-game basis this season under fourth-year head coach Jason Rife, the Wagner men's lacrosse team gave Siena a battle before the Saints pulled away for a 13-6 victory.

With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 0-4 on the year while the Saints improve to 3-2.

The Seahawks spread the ball around on the offensive end as six different Wagner players found the cage, led by sophomore midfielder Colin O'Rourke (Worcester, MA/ St. John's Shrewsbury) who had two tallies on the afternoon. Also scoring goals for the Seahawks were freshman attack Sam Morrissey (Long Valley, NJ/ West Morris Central), sophomore attack Cody Isdaner (Gladwyne, PA/ Episcopal Academy), junior midfielder William Hedges (Shoreham, NY/ Longwood), and sophomore midfielder Brian Faughnan (New Caanan, CT/ New Canaan).

Wagner took an early 2-1 lead on goals by O'Rourke and Faughnan before the Saints reeled off six consecutive goals bridging the first and second quarters in opening up a 7-2 lead. Goals by Isdaner and Hedges helped close the Wagner deficit to 8-4 at halftime.

The Seahawks would draw to within three goals at 8-5 when Morrissey found the back of the cage with 9:39 to go in the third quarter. The Saints led by just a 9-5 count heading into the fourth quarter before outscoring the Seahawks 4-1 in the final stanza in pulling away for the 13-6 win.

Statistically, the game was much closer than the final score would indicate as the Seahawks held a 31-29 edge in shots while ground balls were even at 36-36. One telling stat in Siena's favor was in the face-off department, as the Saints won 16-of-23 faceoffs. Wagner was 0-of-3 in extra-man opportunities while the disciplined Seahawks did not commit a single penalty in the game, thus the Saints were 0-of-0 in extra-man opportunities.

Freshman goalie Nicholas Gibaldi (Stony Point, NY/ Stony Point) had all eight of Wagner's saves while playing the first 53:25 of the game before giving way to junior Peter Rubin (East Rockaway, NY/ East Rockaway) who played the final 6:35 of the game.

Bryan Neufeld and Collin Parkhurst notched three goals apiece while Mic DeBellis added two goals to pace Siena. Tom Morr played the first 55 minutes of the game in goal for the Saints and was credited with 12 saves while Billy Kelly came on to record two saves in the game's final five minutes.

The Seahawks are next in action on Saturday, March 13 when Wagner travels to West Point, NY to meet 16th-ranked Army in a Noon face-off.
