West Point, NY – The Wagner men's lacrosse team did a representative job on defense but the Seahawks were stymied on the offensive end as Army, the 16th-ranked team in the nation, came away with a 14-1 victory at historic Michie Stadium.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 0-5 on the season while the Black Knights of the Hudson improve to 4-2 in winning their third straight game. Earlier this season, Army defeated a Cornell team, that is currently ranked 14th in the nation, 11-9. The Black Knights also gave No. 1-ranked Syracuse all it could handle before dropping an 11-9 decision to the Orange.
Army galloped out to a 6-0 lead after one quarter of play before the Seahawks settled down, being out-scored by just an 8-1 count over the next three quarters of the game. Army held just a 2-0 edge in the second quarter as the team entered their respective locker rooms at halftime with the Black Knights on top 8-0.
After out-scoring Wagner 3-0 in the third quarter, Army tallied the first three goals of the final stanza before sophomore attack
Brian Faughnan (New Canaan, CT/ New Canaan) notched an unassisted goal with 2:13 remaining in the game.
Garrett Thul paced Army with three goals while Devin Lynch and Cory Reiser with two goals apiece. Jeremy Boltus was the game's top playmaker, distributing four assists on the afternoon. Tom Palesky reoorded three saves in the first half to gain the win before giving way to a trip of goalies in the second half who combined for five saves.
Army held a 43-16 edge in shots but out-shot the Seahawks by just a 12-11 margin In the second half. The Black Knights also held a 38-18 advantage in ground balls while winning 16-of-19 faceoffs. Wagner did not have any extra man opportunities while Army was 2-of-3 in this department.
Freshman
Nicholas Gibaldi (Rocky Point, NY/ Rocky Point) came up with 13 saves in goal while playing the first 43:42 of the game. Junior
Peter Rubin (East Rockaway, NY/ East Rockaway) then came on to record one save while seeing action in the final 16:18 of the contest. Rubin led the Seahawks in ground balls with four while senior long-stick midfielder
Colin Shaw (Malvern, PA/ Archbishop Carroll) had three ground balls to go with a team-high three caused turnovers.
The Seahawks are next in action on Wednesday, March 16 when Wagner hosts Manhattan in a 3:30 pm face-off at Wagner College Stadium.
