Sam Morrissey (Long Valley, NJ/ West Morris Central) each recorded hat tricks for Wagner but the Seahawks wound up on the short end of a 14-10 decision to Providence at chilly Wagner College Stadium.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 0-2 on the season while the Friars improve to 1-0.
Sophomore midfielder Colin O'Rourke (Worcester, MA/ St. John's Shrewsbury) opened the scoring with a 15-yard blast with 11:52 left in the first quarter to give the Seahawks the early 1-0 lead. Providence then countered with four unanswered goals to go up 4-1 after one quarter with two of the goals coming from Andrew Barton. Morrissey then opened the second quarter scoring with a goal off an Isdaner feed with 12:53 left to make it 4-2. Morrissey's second goal, off another Isdaner assist, with 5:10 left in the half drew the Seahawks to within 5-4.
The Friars then rattled off the next three goals to take a comfortable 8-4 lead into halftime. Providence opened the second-half scoring with a goal by Steve Lydon before Wagner answered with consecutive tallies by O'Rourke and Isdaner which brought the Seahawks to within three goals at 9-6.This, however, was as close as Wagner would get as the Friars reeled off the next five goals to seize a commanding 14-6 lead.
Isdaner finished with five points on three goals and two assists for the Seahawks while Morrissey notched four points on three goals and one assist. O'Rourke finished with two goals while junior attack
Mike Hurley (Billerica, MA/ Billeria) and sophomore midfielder
David Phillips (Somers Point, NJ/ St. Augustine Prep) added one goal apiece. Freshman
Nicholas Gibaldi (Rocky Point, NY/ Rocky Point) had 11 saves in goal for the Seahawks.
Providence held a 35-28 edge in shots, a 30-23 advantage in ground balls and won 17-of-28 faceoffs. Wagner's man-down defensive unit did a fine job, as the Friars were just 1-of-7 in extra-man opportunities while the Seahawks were 2-of-4 in extra-man opportunities.
Providence featured a balanced offensive attack as Barton, Matthew Mueller , Sean Wright and JT Weber all scored two goals apiece for the Friars. Daniel Textor was Providence's leading playmaker with two assists.
Wagner is next in action on Tuesday, March 1 when the Seahawks play host to Lafayette at 3:00 p.m.
