Mahoney’s 18 Points Power Wagner Past Mount St. Mary’s 65-54

Senior guard Megan Mahoney (Staten Island, NY/ St. Peter's) scored a game-high 18 points while dishing out a game-high seven assists and junior center Kelly Clark (Neptune, NJ/ St. Rose) added 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds to lead Wagner to a 65-54 win over Mount St. Mary's in Northeast Conference (NEC) play.

With the win, the Seahawks improve to 11-13 on the season, 4-9 in the NEC while the Mountaineers fall to 6-18, 3-10 in league play. As part of the NEC's Rivalry Week, Wagner will meet these same Mountaineers of Mount St. Mary's on Monday, February 14 in a 7:00 pm clash as both teams continue their quest for a berth in the upcoming NEC Tournament.

Clark led Wagner with nine first-half points as the Seahawks built a 29-22 halftime lead. The teams traded baskets to open the second half. After Sandra Anderson drilled a three-pointer with 13:01 left in the game to draw the Mount to within six at 40-34, Wagner answered with a game-changing 10-0 run over the next 8:11 to balloon the lead to 14 at 50-34. After Clark made one of two free throws at the 11:16 mark, neither team scored for the next 2:10 until Mahoney hit a layup at the 9:06 juncture to make it 43-34.

A layup by Clark at the 8:32 mark made it 45-34, giving the Seahawks a double-digit lead which they would never relinquish. Sophomore forward Marie-Laurence Archambault (Montreal, Quebec. Montmorency) followed Clark's layup by sticking a three-point jumper at the 7:50 mark to make it 48-34. Mahoney then capped the run with a jumper with 6:16 left that gave Wagner a commanding 50-34 lead and the Seahawks never looked back.

Senior guard Stephanie McBride (Mechanicville, NY/ Catholic Central), who was inserted back into the starting lineup for the first time since the Saint Francis (PA) game on Jan. 8, supplied a season-high 14 points on 4-for-7 shooting from three-point range. In her last three games, McBride is averaging 12.0 points and 3.6 assists.

Clark, who leads the NEC in field goal percentage (.566,) was 7-of-11 from the field. In addition to her 16 points and nine rebounds, she also blocked four shots and came up with two steals. Mahoney was 7-of-15 from the field in scoring her 18 points. In addition to her seven assists, she added four rebounds, two steals and a block. Senior forward Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY/ Notre Dame Academy) turned in another productive outing with eight points to go with a game highs in rebounds with nine and steals with four. The four steals tied her career high.

Mount St. Mary's was led in scoring by Mary Dunn and Ashley Christie who tallied 12 points apiece while Selina Mann added 10 points. Dunn grabbed a team-high seven rebounds while Mann dished out a team-high five assists.

For the game, Wagner outshot the Mount 44 percent to 39 percent while the Mountaineers held a slim 36-35 edge in rebounds. Wagner had 18 assists on 25 made field goals (25-57) and turned the ball over 17 times while the Mount turned the ball over a whopping 23 times which led to a 24-10 Wagner edge in points off turnovers. Wagner also held a sizeable 10-0 edge in fast break points.

In building their 29-22 halftime edge, the Seahawks closed the first half with a 10-4 run over the final 7:29. Wagner scored 18 of those points off turnovers as the Mountaineers were guilty of 13 first-half turnovers. McBride started the Wagner run with a three-point jumper at the 6:49 mark off an assist from Mahoney. Consecutive layups by Clark increased the lead to eight at 28-20, with the latter bucket coming with 4:07 remaining in the half. A free throw by Mahoney at the 1:43 mark gave the Seahawks their biggest lead of the half of nine at 29-20.

Wagner out-shot the Mount 41 percent to 33 percent in the first half while the Mountaineers out-rebounded the Seahawks 19-15. Wagner held an 8-0 advantage in fast break points and held a 16-12 edge in points in the paint.

Clark led the Seahawks in scoring with nine first-half points while Mahoney and McBride tallied eight and six points, respectively.

NOTES - In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Day, the Seahawks wore pink socks. The Seahawks were 6-of-13 (.462) from beyond the arc which is tied for their second-best three-point shooting game of the season. Clark has now moved into third place on the Seahawks' all-time blocked shots list with 129. Next on the list is Meredith Kerns (1998-2002) with 153. Archambault, who went 1-of-3 from three-point range, moved into a tie for sixth place on the Wagner single-season three-point field goals made list with 59. Next on the list in fifth place is Susan Moffat who made 68 three-pointers in two different seasons, 1996-97 and again in 1997-98.
